Popping Noise From Drivers Side Wheel Well
Yesterday when I was backing out to go to work my car made a loud popping noise from the drivers side wheel well. I pulled back in to my driveway and was able to duplicate it a couple of times before it stopped. Initially I thought it was a rock stuck somewhere as I found a large-ish rock laying in the driveway after. It ultimately stopped and I drove to work with no issues. Later that evening when I left work, again backing out, I heard it again.
Last night I tried to duplicate it and couldn’t. So this morning when I backed out of my driveway I didn’t hear the sound...then about a mile down the road I went to turn and heard it again. There doesn’t seem to be any consistent pattern to when to happening other than I’m usually turning at the time (but it’s not every time). I have no mods on my car yet and the only thing I did was wash it the night before the popping stared. I know popping can happen when brakes get wet but it’s been over 48 hours since so I would think they’d be dry. It’s in the 60’s here right now and has been mostly dry. 2015 SS L99

I would suspect a suspension component. How many miles on car?

Don't know how many miles you have on your car but it could be the strut mount is worn out .

There’s only about 25k miles on the car. I do have a little more information though. It’s been happening more consistently now. I’d say in a half hour drive I hear it 1-3 times. It however only seems to be happening when I make a fairly sharp right turn. It hasn’t happened on left turns, straight driving, or easy rights.
I am planning to pull the wheel off tonight to look under there if i have time but not sure yet.

Update — I pulled off my wheel(s) tonight and figured out the location. It’s actually coming from my passenger side front strut.
I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to struts so here’s my question — Could it be the strut itself or is it more likely that it’s the strut mount? If it’s the strut itself is there a certain type I should be buying? Autozone has struts but they’re literally almost $600 and then when I go to other stores they’re like $80 so i’m not sure why there is such a massive price difference.

Probably the mounts. I had the same noise on both sides when I had lowering springs and when after I installed coilovers.

Why would you want to put parts made in China on your car? Forget Vato-zone. Get OEM parts from a GM online parts site.
Since you don't want to be doing it twice, get both the mount and the strut. Also, I probably would just go ahead and get the other side as well. It's probably on its way out too. |
