What I did was itemize all of my monthly spending with Bills, food, gas, parking, everything...then get some quotes on car insurance and payments. I rounded everything up a bit as well to be sure everything was covered. Made sure what I wanted I could afford, and after quadruple checking the numbers, I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

The insurance and car payments, as well as the OTD price of the car were all actually a little less that what I had accounted for, so it actually worked out in my favor.

I am in love with my car, and could not be happier that I did all the necessary preparation and research. This is my first new car, and first BIG purchase. Do your homework!!

My car cost more then I make in a year (not counting over time). But I had a huge chunk of change ready to go to put down/save for payments.

Never been able to afford it otherwise. Insurance didn't set me back too much more a year then what I was already paying - since having Onstar saves me more then it costs to maintain - but gas is insane. (of course I have to fill the tank ever 4 days so... )

If at any time you can't afford to put that 500.00 in the bank, or have to touch that money for an emergency, then you very likely cannot afford this car. As an added bonus, you will have saved up your down payment, or a nice chunk of change for some mods by March!

Good luck to you. Hope this helped.
Best bit advice in the entire thread....well said.

EXACTLY!

Really... Come on.

It really is the same for ANY car you might buy.

What can you really afford?

Ballpark estimate:

$650 Monthly payment (Depending on how much you put down)
$200 Monthly gas (Depending how much you drive)
$150 Monthly insurance (Depending on Age)

Be informed, don't live paycheck to paycheck just to own a car...

The uPkeep on an SS is expensive also. Tires are 800-1000 a set. Oil is 65? Of course these are not bought monthly but take into consideration these things can come up at any point. If you're unsure of if you can afford it. You prolly can't. Save your money til you can otherwise you'll look like a dumbass when they come repo your car cause you fell behind.

Do yourself a favor and just wait till next year and set aside money each month towards the down payment. Don't look at getting a brand spanking new SS, get a used 2010. The car is awesome and all, but trust me. Digging yourself into a financial mess that early in life is not worth it.

And honestly, not sure why a teenager (I'm assuming since he mentioned his parent possibly paying) needs to get a Camaro SS...

There are plenty of dealers who have no standards at all. Interest rates that would make Capone blush.

Very true, but the law holds them to within two and half points over the bank now.
