Help with 21 inch tires
I have a 2014 Spring Special Edition 2SS RS Camaro. As with most Special Editions it comes with the 21 inch rims, although they look nice tire choice is poor and the only options I have been given at local places are OEM tires (Pirelli) and those tires are nearly $600/ea and only last 10-14k miles with GOOD driving.
The stock tire size is... FRONT: 245/40-21 REAR: 275/35-21 My question is, can I install different sizes without issue? Specifically smaller sidewall? The tires I was looking at was the Hancook Ventus V12 Evo 2. I have had the Evo K110 before on another Camaro and they are very similar to the Pirelli. The sizes available that are closest to OEM spec are.... FRONT: 245/35-21 REAR: 275-30-21 Basically the tires would be 5 less on the sidewall. Is this a big deal? Any help/info/guidance is greatly appreciated. |

I can't answer your question about the 21 inch tires. Please allow me to suggest something... If I owned your car, I would look into buying some 20" wheels and tires. It would save you some money down the road, and you'll have a bunch of tires to choose from... Those 21" tires are awfully expensive.

I believe they handle just as well, and they certainly ride smoother than the Pirelli. Way cheaper too. I think the Hankook is a good choice. You speedometer will read a little fast with the new Hankooks as they are a half inch smaller in diameter. Lee |

21's are a bastard size. There are not many choices in that size that's why they are priced so high. You would do better to go with a 20 or move up to a 22. You may be able to buy 20 inch wheels with tires cheaper than the 21 inch tires alone.

Thank you all for the replies. When I first priced the 21" tires my first thought was "I can buy 20" rims and tires for less". I was actually looking at some ZL1/Z28 replica rims.
I suppose there are pro's and con's to this situation so I am still not 100% sure what I want to do. I really just wanted to make sure those tires would work OK and if there were (if any) negatives to dropping down the size. The difference is so small I guess the only issue is the speedo, but I would imagine that can be re-calibrated? To Beaver Creek: How much faster is the speedo? |

Damn...You are going to make me do math, aren't you?
That's alright, I wanted to know for myself anyway. The stock Pirellis will turn 720.72 revolutions per mile. The Hankooks will turn 733.84 revolutions per mile. That is 1.8% more revolutions per mile so your speedometer will be off 1.8%. So...to go 60 miles per hour, your speedometer should read 61.08. To go 100 miles per hour, your speedometer should read 101.8. You can interpolate from there. There is a downside though... While you have the Hankooks on, your odometer will show 1.8% more miles than you have actually driven. Whew... Lee |

Go to <www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infotiremath.dos>
Just type in current and desired tire and it will do all the math for you.

275/35/21 to 275/30/21 difference is actually less. So if I am going 65MPH speedo will report 62.54MPH 275/35/21 to 275/40/20 is basically the same. |

I also have a Spring Special Edition. Love the OEMS 21s but you hit the nail on the head, replacement tires way expensive. So I went with the graphite MRR228s 20x10 fronts and 20x11s rears. Went from the stock tires to a 275/40/20 in the front and a 315/35/20 in the rear. Nice thing about them is that they are pretty much identical in size to the OEM tires so the speedometer does not require reprogramming.

Sold my 21 tires to a Camaro5 member. Sold wheels at Super Chevy.
The profits from the two sales completely paid for smaller (19") wheels, powdercoating and Firestone Wingfoot A/S's! So much smoother, quieter, better grip (wet/cold), AND they're ROUND every morning! 21's look good, but that's about all. Good luck with your search.

I went with the Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2. Bought them from simpletire.com for less than $750. I love the way my factory 21s look but its just flat out a dead no good size for our cars. Pirelli is running a racket on our cars and IMO is very overpriced for what you get. I cant go past a 275 width in the rear without spending some serious $ and NO ONE makes drag radials for 21s. My car is cammed with 4.11s and " sexy" just isnt doing it for me these days. Dropping in an ECS sc kit soon....so the 21s will go to the highest bidder and Im going to pick up some nice wide 18s.Good luck with the wheels if you want to keep them. They do have curb appeal.
