i went a little to far and scraped the cowl (i think thats the name) the black piece under the front bumper. It is bothering the hell out of me cause I can see it ... is there an easy way to fix it?

Sounds like you're talking about the bumper cover, (front lower fascia or front spoiler works too). I would touch it up and wait till it gets chipped/damaged bad enough to have it professionally repaired.

The cowl is the panel behind the hood, some folks also call the firewall a cowl

You might post a photo, but if you're talking about the lower spoiler, yep, if you keep the car long enough it's gonna get curbed, and rash from road trash being hit, along with the usual front fascia rock dings and the occasional suicidal bird.

If it's scratches you can probably get touch-up paint from your dealer or a good parts store that carries automotive paint. If you can find it in a can, you can spray a blob onto a scrap plate then use a fine brush, like a modelers brush. (Don't spray it on)

If you don't like that idea, the next step is to take it to the body shop for an estimate to get it repaired properly.

1. live with it
2. touch it up
3. body shop, open wallet, dump cash out

I have the same thing and it bugs the crap out of me knowing it is there and p#$$% me off when I tag it. I will usually at least tap it when parking in a parking place with those dumb concrete things. I know they are there but I can't see where they are because the nose is slanted down and I can't see the end of the car. I have my seat up all the way but that doesn't seem to help.

I just park a little futher back there are plenty of trucks and SUV's long and I still don't stick out as far as them and if any body says any thing to bad. Their not the ones paying for the repairs or the monthly.

this is exactly how i feel!

but if that piece was not there, would the bumper actually hit? this is below the bumper so wouldnt the bumper go over those concrete things?

I tell myself all the time.. I should know by now where the perimeter of my car is without looking.. alas.. once in a while I still pull too far in.. or back in a bit too close..
that is when I can drive it.. It's a vert and I've had nothing but top issues.... starting week three in the shop tomorrow.

Not only is it under the front lip, its also behind it. If something is high enough to hit the front lip, it's going to hit it BEFORE the black piece.

Its actually an air dam. Its not there to protect your bumper from anything. I wouldn't recommend taking it off.

don't worry about it. i hit that black strip of rubber a number of times, but its just rubber underneath and bound to get damaged. mines has a bit of scrapes on the bottom but whatever. you can easily replace it. there are 2 screws holding it in place located at the front inside the wheel wells.

Or for 32 bucks you can replace it. #19 in the pic. There are more than 2 bolts on each side holding this on. Look up underneath the front bumper, there are plastic bolts holding it on the whole width of the bumper.

Back in, or stop short. Feel for you, mine has some rubs on it too.

It's called the deflector, and it's made to take the hits and keep your car from getting the hits.
