Trans Am racers were production-based cars with engines of 305 cid or less. Chevy worked a forged steel version of the 283-cid V-8's crankshaft into its 327 V-8 to get 302 cid. Big-port Corvette heads, solid lifters, a hot cam, a baffled oil pan, and a Holley four-barrel on a tuned aluminum manifold were specified. Horsepower was rated at 290; it likely was closer to 360.

At least 1,000 streetable examples had to be produced, and Chevy's tack was to make the 302 part of a Camaro Regular Production Option Code. So low-key was the effort that the car wasn't advertised, or even mentioned in sales literature. The knowledgeable buyer had to order a base 6-cylinder Camaro ($2,466), then scan the order sheet for what turned out to be the most famous RPO in history: Z28.

The package cost $400 and included the 302, the F-41 handling suspension, 15-inch tires on Corvette six-inch Rally wheels, and quick-ratio manual steering. A Muncie four-speed was the only transmission; power front disc brakes were a mandatory $100 option.

RPO Z28 was available on the coupe only and could be combined with the hidden-headlamp RS option group. There were no Z28 emblems on the car, but the package did include broad racing stripes on the hood and trunklid. Camaro's rear lip spoiler was a popular option.

The Z28 had a buckboard ride and sports-car handling. The 302 was a peaky devil, hard to launch and lethargic under 4000 rpm. Driven as it was meant to be, performance was shattering. Road & Track settled on 7500 rpm (!) as the optimal shift point and reported 63 mph in first gear, 85 in second, and 113 in third. Top speed approached 140 mph. "If the Z-28 isn't a bona fide racing car," said the magazine, "then we've never seen one."

and from another source:

Chevrolet listed curb weights for the 1967 Camaro as 2,910 pounds for the 6-cylinder coupe, 3,070 pounds for the 8-cylinder coupe, 3,165 pounds for the 6-cylinder convertible, and 3,325 for the 8-cylinder convertible. Add 21 pounds for power windows, 20 pounds for the folding rear seat, 86 pounds for air conditioning, 9 pounds for power brakes, 23 pounds for front disc brakes, 10 pounds for the 250-cid 6-cylinder engine, 39 pounds for the 327-cid V-8 engine, 72 pounds for the 350-cid V-8 engine, 258 pounds for the 396-cid V-8 engine, 7 pounds for the four speed manual transmission, 14 pounds for the Powerglide, 56 pounds for the Turbo Hydra-Matic, 38 pounds for dual exhaust, 29 pounds for power steering, 15 pounds for heavy duty battery, 8 pounds for an AM radio, 9 pounds for an AM-FM radio, and 17 pounds for the Rally Sport.

Nothing mentioned about any special light weight parts for the Z28.

High-Tech at the time?
If so the twin turbo V6 on a DI engine fits the bill, yes!?

If only. (RS HH)

I agree with most of what Number3 posted, indeed there were no "light weight" parts. Besides the suspension (or should I say due to the suspension) the big difference was the Z/28 sat lower (close to two inches) than all other Camaros despite all others having 14" wheels/tires while the Z/28 had 15" wheels/tires, that's why the SS came with F70 14" tires but the Z/28 came with slightly narrower E70 15" tires. Based on those weight listings, I come up with 3,205 lb for a '69 Z/28. 3,070 lb. base V8 weight, 32lb power disk brakes, 72lb V8, 7lb 4 speed, 15lb Heavy duty battery, 9lb AM-FM radio. If I remember correctly, when I bought mine in '69 it weighed about 3,375 lb, I paid about $3,385 for it, so just about a dollar a pound.

Man that rear bumper off the Leno car is on a few of the others also. Wonder if it is gonna be the new standard, or part of a different body kit?

So this "light weight" Camaro didn't really exist.

Good point. The 87,88,89 1LE was more of a lightweight racer, and they could do the same with the 5th gen., but it would be a tough car to sell.
No A/C
Crank windows
No radio

The 1st gen Z/28 was just a great motor and suspension setup... For it's time.
