KOOKS header question.
Looking for pros and cons between the locking bolts KOOKS supplies and reusing stock exhaust manifold bolts. Seems like I have read some guys prefer the stock manifold bolts and I am wondering why. The headers are just hanging by a couple of bolts for now and will be easy to do either setup.

Are the bolts the same length? If the header flange is thicker you need the supplied bolts I would imagine

Ive reused stock manifold gaskets on the manifolds, bought new for the headers and when I take headers off I reuse those...
Not that it matters, i just figured if there is any seal or mating of the two surfaces reusing them in same setup is best. But also could be I just like new shiney things... Ive also reused the stock bolts on my ARH LTs ... never liked the locking bolts. |

I used the Stage8 locking fasteners that came with mine. I only used the locks in the beginning, but have had the headers off at least 3-4 times for other mods and haven’t used the locks since and haven’t had any bolts loosen.
I’ll second for using the factory exhaust gaskets. I’ve reused the same gaskets each time I’ve had to take the headers off and they’re still like new. You can see the diff when compared to what is sent with the headers.

Just some info for you, I wonder if you saw the same thing. My LS3 header bolts had allot of resistance coming out, almost like there were slightly mushroomed threads at the end on purpose, a couple came out so hard that I lightly ground the end down just a bit and then they went in super easy. Now I'm wondering if these will come loose.

I haven’t had any resistance removing header bolts, mine have always come out clean. I did use a very light coating of antiseize when I installed the new header bolts.

Thanks for the info every one. dookie454 my exhaust manifold bolts had a little resistance when I took them out but I used a 3/8" drive air ratchet and that may have masked any extra resistance. I looked in the GM manual and saw they want thread locker used on the bolts when being reused. I called KOOKS today and their tech said the locking bolt setup is more reliable when used on road courses. Again thanks for the info.
