Wheel finish issue
While washing my car I noticed that the rear drivers side wheel is faded. I was told at a local car meet that it's probably a film on the wheel but I don't think that's the case...cause it won't come off...lol. I'm pretty sure it's an issue with the finish on the wheel. You can easily tell which wheel I'm referring to in the photos. It seems to have been stripped of clear coat. Will I have to get it re-powder coated or is there a way to restore the clear coat/glossy finish?

That’s weird. Those look like the LG wheels? Maybe call them and see if they’ve ever had any issues with this. My wheels are a satin (almost closer to matte) black and I wanted something a little glossier so I sprayed plastidip glossifier on them once for a few days and it turned out pretty well, although, while I’m sure it would bring back some of the black color and make it look less discolored, it probably wouldn’t be a perfect match. No harm in giving it a shot though as a temporary fix if it does turn out that it needs to be professionally repaired

Look like the results of using a bad spray-on wheel cleaner or tire shine applied too liberally at a car wash lots of times. I'd try a Dawn wash followed by a good paint scrub/cleaner followed by a wax and see what happens

Looks exactly what happened to mine when I had it detailed, they used the wrong cleaner on it and it ate right through the clear. Had a paint touch up guy try to bring it back to its former glory with mixed results.

It looks like its on the face of the rim and not the inside. I think someone used a bad cleaner as well.
I have had my rims repainted a bunch of times now due to curb rash. They look brand new once they were done, just make sure you get them painted SATIN black and not matte black. Good luck!

That Yuma sun is killer. Do you park outside in the same spot everyday?

I bought it used. Noticed the wheel the first time I washed it. I'm guessing the last guy used some wheel cleaner that didn't agree with the wheels. But yeah...the Yuma sun will destroy everything in its path! I keep her in the garage!

Exactly. AFAIK, the stock wheels have "Camaro" stamped in them. These have "Z-28" and these never came on the Z28 - and they don't look like the Z29 wheels.
That doesn't look like bad cleaner - short of lacquer thinner, I can't think of much you'd put on a car that would do that. maybe brake cleaner. That looks like a crummy product used for the finish. You can easily get them repainted with quality products. You can usually go to a PPG paint shop or a Tire shop and ask if they know someone who fixes up wheels. |
