Talking BB Exhaust on ZL1= HP&TQ

Some people believe you don't gain any HP&TQ from exhaust systems, but according to BB and Dyno test...You Do!!!

my .02

pro's
1. construction and qualtity of the exhaust is better than factory piece.
2. sound is different (I dont' find it better with stock midpipe but that is subjective)
3. adds hp and torque at low rpm.

Con's
1. exhaust is heavier
2. exhaust is quieter
3. ~cost $1650
4. they don't publish average gain.

Now here is the reality of this system the gains Per $ spend art just not there. I don't think I have spent $1650 on all my mods. I am ~50-70hp most likely.

I always question manufactures when they don't just publish average gains. if they picka certain RPM it could actually lose power at another RPM.

I have seen no catback yet that cost per hp was not a complete waste of money unless you are adding after you have done tons of other mods.

Now this exhasut may be great if you ditch the cats though. I have not heard one yet catless with longtubes. The factory catback is almost too loud for me catless. I would proabably wire a switch to permanatly close the flaps in certian situations if my cats accidently fall off of the car on the factory exhaust.

my exhaust gains 50hp and 50 lbft of torque, send me $2000 and ill have one sent your way.

Does this prove anything to you?

Moral of the story, when an independent shop tests the stock exhaust to the BB back to back we will consider the hp gains/ losses otherwise this is just marketing talk to sell you a product.

With that said I do have a B&B Fusion exhaust on my ZL1, I wanted it because its a full 3" exhaust vs the 2.5" factory exhaust and my setup definitely requires that.

that doesnt mean they are quieter at all. The way the mufflers are designed might be completely different, also judging how loud a car sounds from a video never works. The mic's on those camcorders adjust sensitivity depending on how loud the sounds are, tricking you into thinking its actually lower.

I also wanna find out myself if the B&B is lighter or heavier since I have both exhausts off the car at the moment.

yeah wieght it up. 304 pipe might be a tad lighter if the stock is 409 if the wall thickness was the same but resonators usually add some kind of wieght.

my zl1 is a little bit louder than my budies Z06 with BB fusion on it. he was just over the other day side by zide not camera invloved.

what hp level were you at to gain 50hp with just a catback?

lol, no I was just trying to make a statement that just because the manufacturer of a performance part claims a certain horsepower increase doesnt mean anything unless a third party tests the part independantly otherwise all you will hear is a biased opinion. B&B's website says they have the BEST exhaust for the ZL1, how true is this?

but at a 1000+ hp, I think an exhaust might be worth 50hp not sure, I didnt like the factory's 2.5" pipes, too small for a 427 and a 4.0 blower

yeah with the 4.0L on there you will make ungodly power.

The BB is a real nice piece for sure my point was just IMO it is just not a good entry level mod for this car. for someone on a build like yours where cost is no opbject then it can be good because the dual mode can minimize drone and you car will have other exhaust modes to wake up the sound.

My buddie loves his on his Z06. I liked the stinger I had on my Z06 a bit better sound wise but it droned more than his fusion does.

I got looking into mods for this car and there is just so much power to be had before you add a catback cheaper.

on this car to me catback is one of the last mods I will do depending on how the factory one sounds with headers.

I have the Billy Boat catback on my ZL1 vert and have actually had the dual-mode mufflers and then they changed them out to a different single-mode mufflers. The dual-mode was a little deeper but not really louder than stock. With the single-mode it is definitely louder and a lot better. It also does feel a little faster but no way to tell for sure; that may just be my mind playing tricks on me; but with being 3" there probably is more flow.

I like the sound. It sounds deeper than the stock exhaust; but that's a lot of money for 7.47 hp at 2000 rpms. It looks the hp increase is less as the rpms climb.

If you contact them they will send you the actual numbers for the Dyno test. I did and it showed a gain across the entire range except at one rpm...maybe 3800 or so. A loss of like 2hp if memory serves. I don't have the document handy but when I get to my office I will figure out the average gain and post it for all who are curious...
