What gears? Stock rear end? What is your goal 1/4 mile trap? Do you want slicks or drag radials?

No one will agree with me, but with your weight, gear and spraying it I would run a Mt drag radial (27.2" tall) 295/45 17 on a 17x10 wheel.

Hoosier 28x10-17 (True Drag Slick - Non-DOT) 28" tall
M/T ET Street 26x11.5-17 (DOT Drag Radial) 26.5" tall M/T ET Street Radial II 295/45R17 (DOT Drag Radial) 27.2" tall M&H RaceMaster 325/45R17 (DOT Drag Radial) 28" tall Nitto really doesn't have anything in a 17", unless you want to go down below 26". |

K,
I'm most probably going with Welds and the Hoosier 28/10/17 Drag Slick... Without major rear end mods, you cant get a better tire for pure drag racing... (My Opinion) I'm waiting for a response right now from the company Blazzin got his from... I'm looking for four wheels and the tires but I'ld prefer not to go with a real slim "skinny" up front... These cars are too heavy.... (Again, My Opinion) They are fine as long as things are good, but what happens if you get bad sideways...

Hoosier slicks with M&H Skinny's on Bogarts. 682RWHP(whipple) with a M6. Car and set-up are better than me-for now:/

Depending on how much power you are talking about, a drag radial will be just fine. Last year we ran consistent mid-1.50 60 ft/times (1.54, 1.55, 1.55, 1.56, 1.58) at 3 different tracks on 305/18" MT ET Street Drag Radials without a hint of tire spin. One benefit of radials is that you don't have to buy front wheels/tires (don't ever mix rear slicks with front radials) so you can save a little money. There are other benefits to running a front skinny too, I am just saying that if you are on a budget you can get away with running the factory front wheels/tires if you use a rear drag radial vs. a slick which requires you to run a bias ply front tire also.
There is nothing wrong with a set of slicks, just pointing out the perks of a drag radial. While there are cars running 7's on a small 275 drag radial, they don't work quite as well on an IRS platform so if the car is making 800+ hp and you plan on spending a lot of time at the track you might as well get a full set of wheels with front skinnies/rear slicks. This will be the absolute lightest setup and will provide the most traction potential. |
