How did they get the LS3 to warm up so fast?

I've owned v8's all my life and none have come close to warming up as fast as the one in my Camaro. It's up to full temp in a mile or less, at least according to the gauge. Also I turn the heater on and it's blowing very warm air. The cooling system is full to the cap. My Explorer which is very heavy and has only a 4.6 liter engine takes several miles to warm up to full operating temperature. My Mustang gt's and the 4th gen Camaro took several miles to warm up as well as other vehicles I've owned. It's hurting my head trying to understand how they engineered it. Thanks

Modified Arizona cooling system.

I noticed that too. Less than a mile from pulling out of my garage, the gauge is up where it would stay normally. It doesn't happen to any of my other vehicles (Acura and a Nissan).

No coolant goes through the intake manifold.

If you have the gage pack, check out the oil temp. That takes about 8 minutes or approximately 4 miles to come to temp. At that point, your engine is about ready to rod around. Metals and bearings warmed enough to take abuse. The water jacket temps come up pretty quick on most cars as the thermostat is keeping the water circulating around the block till the right temp for the thermo to open to the radiator.

Makes for quick warmups.

All automakers are trying to make their cars heat up quickly, it lets them lean out the mixture earlier, helping with emissions. The layout of the LS engines gives less metal to bring up to temp.

Just because the coolant is warm does not mean the engine is warmed up. While I'll agree that the LS3 coolant temp does warm up very quickly, (even faster than my Corolla actually) you should really be checking your oil temp, trans temp, etc before giving it the beans.

I have a catch can on mine, so the oil gets combobulated faster through the entire drivetrain.

I try to always wait for my oil temp to get over 110 before I start driving the car. Coolant temp raises quickly, but the oil temp is what's important.

The oil temp I didn't think to look at but will. However the engine coolant does heat up more quickly than any other engine I've owned. My Mustang Gt didn't have a metal intake manifold either and it had a smaller 4.6 liter engine and it took much longer to warm up. I'm very easy on it until I'm sure it's fully warmed up. Even with the oil at max temp I'm not so sure everything is at full operating temperature and fully expanded.
