There is a big difference between "ricers" and "tuners". The ricers are usually all show no go with a crapload of stickers and those hideous wheels referred to as "hella flush". The tuners spend time on the power train and not the stickers. I've seen some nasty Evos and Subarus on the highway. I have respect for the tuner crowd they pull some awesome power out of the smaller displacement engines.

Never realized there were two different groups. I guess there are fair number of "tuners" going 9s at OSW. It looks to me like they boost the piss out of factory blocks and when it blows, they just put the parts on another junkyard block with the certain engines like the v-tech being the most desirable. Even their parents can be delusional as one of my co-workers was asking about my car and proceeded to tell me how his son had a new turbo for his Honda that was already cutting 10s without a turbo. I just left that alone.

I had one try to race while I was driving home on I-95. He was pretty heavily modded with a lot more than just a fart can, but I was already doing 90. What were we going to do, run down 95 doing 140? That would be way stupid. They put you in jail for street racing down here no matter what the conditions, so I just don't do it.

I think this goes here:

T'was a night in mid May and caught at the light,

I spied a domestic V8- with no cops in sight.

Should I try, should I dare with my much smaller motor,

try to beat that Camaro- even with that big blower?

As the light turned to green, I pulled like no joke

Camaro erupted in clouds of tire smoke.

On Smasher, on Rev-ver, on Stroker, on Blitzen!

(These are the names of my four VTEC pistons.)

Racing ahead I’m the star of the action-

but I know I’m in trouble when Camaro gets traction.

Grabbing second, I hear the RPMs sing

My mirror is blocking my shopping cart wing…

I now hear the roar of the big monster gaining,

And try in vain to keep my four bangers straining.

In a second the shock wave hits with a blast

and my stickers go flying, now a thing of the past.

Don’t bother with third, cause now it’s too late

So I try to act cool like I can relate.

As I watched the taillights get smaller and smaller,

The driver backed off to give me a holler-

“You can’t win them all,” he said with a smile,

“Camaro clocks under 12 on the quarter mile.”

This. My FR-S now and my old RX-7 is/was near OEM exterior-wise. Suspension and drivetrain however....

They're just kids... Everyone likes to talk about the 60s and 70s and how great it was. Well it was great, but your average kid, he couldn't afford a Z28 or GTO....kids got Tempests and Chevelles and 4 door Novas then put headers and Cragers on them. Then they thought they had a race car... Not much different than the ricers. Most of them just want to see your car run. Smile, wave and ignore them.

I've seen a 90's civic hatch stick with a 10-13 Camaro SS and my friend was shocked. Power to weight ratio wins especially if the civic weighs well over 1,000 lbs less than us and is pushing close to 260-270 whp or more.

When the engine blows they just run out and get a new one or get a bigger motor. Honda = Lego. Any of their engines will fit in a civic pretty much.

At least our v8s roar.

Ricers purr.. like a domesticated house cat.

OP, I know a number of import cars (I think ricer is so tacky to generalize all Japanese cars) that would light you up and laugh while they are doing it.

Gotta tell ya....I had a STI take me at the track by .01 of a second and 6 MPH faster! I smoked him off the line though.

You got it wrong, they're not trying to race you. It just sounds like they are.

Seriously, I've seen some pretty solid 4 cyl builds do under 11 in the 1320. Some of these "kids" know what they're doing...and...some are still learning.

Hot Rodding hasn't changed, just the available platforms and engines have.
