Check Engine light on

Ok, So my check engine light is on and I took it in to my local repair shop. They ran the test and said it was my Cats throwing the code. I have a 2002 Z-28 Camaro roughly 16,000.00 miles on it. Had the cats replaced. The check engine light went off but after a day came back on. Took it up to autozone and it was throwing a oxygen sensor code out (bank one) I replaced this part myself and it still has the check engine light on. Any ideas on what else it may be. Thanks!

Did you reset the computer (unplugged the battery for 30 seconds-1 minute)? Just did my MAF and the first time I had the light pop back on. Could also be the front sensor that's actually out.. I'd replace all four with Bosch corvette long tail sensors just to see if that does anything and if not just upgrade to and emissions Offroad Y and Longtubes.

Sounds like what was wrong with my car awhile back. I had the code read, fixed the problem, and it would be good for a day then it would throw another code. I repeated the process for a couple weeks then finally gave it to a local dealer and $500 later it's good to go again

A bad AIR valve will also throw converter codes.

my 2002 ws6 trans am showed me the check engine light this late spring, i had 2 codes
oxygen sensor--like you--bank1 front- means at exhaust manifold right side and i had the air pump code also..
i did not mess around, i replaced all 4 oxy sensors+ air pump, and both injection pipes+ the air pump had seized up and shorted up the relay.

{the air pump,is located in the inner left side fender} &the injection pipes were very dirty full of carbon,as you know, we have one on each side bolted on top of the exhaust manifold .

i aways run my trans am on 91 octane.has mobil1 synthetic oil since day 1,my car is stock, has about 93000miles.
after that i replaced all my stuff the check engine light went off. as for checking my codes i have a innova 3160 scanner.

hope this helps a little.

Just my $.02, the best thing would be to have the O2 sensor codes tuned out. Like Zabo said, get some longtubes and get rid of the stock pipes. It free's up more HP and sounds better, plus doing that you would need to get it tuned... so your killing 2 birds with 1 stone.

Sorry, I'm not trying to jack the thread, but curious? I have to pass emissions, so if I buy a emissions ory, and long tubes, it'll still pass emissions???

No, you would need a y-pipe with converters if you have a visual emissions inspection.

Like Demonspeed said, you would need CAT's for the visual inspection. Of course you could always get hi flow cat's, if they are used... you could just punch out the center section and have it hollow all the way through. If your state doesn't do visual and just does the sniffer check, as long as it is tuned good you will pass with lt's with no cat's.

i would just go with a catted y-pipe and then you dont have to worry about it. it would suck to buy the off road y and then not pass inspection and have to buy the catted one after although i dont think you have anything to worry about in Texas.

I live in Misssouri. I'll probably go with a catted y pipe and everything behind it. Still not sure if I'm going headers or not. Someone told me its difficult to match headers and a high flow y with cats. But they've been wrong in the past, lol

they sell combos, headers w/ catted y so i know it is possible. go to ws6store.com and to the 98-02 section look in Headers and you will find the combos i speak of

and i mentioned Texas cause the OP has Texas listed as his location.

It's very easy to match long tubes with a y-pipe w/cats. Like dmginc says, pretty much all of the manufacturers offer a combo. Check out www.texas-speed.com for their own line of affordable exhaust. WS6store.com is great for the other brands as they usually have the best pricing.
