I own a '69 SS vert and now the '11 SS vert. The '69 verts are harder to come by, especially clean ones. Those will continue to go up in value, and he is correct about the price range of them. $25-35K is the norm for a clean '69 driver car. Pristine ones (could be yours if you restore it further) push $50-60K now.

You won't see much depreciation on a 2011 SS vert, look at how well the coupes have held their value for the last 2 years. The verts always have higher resale, and they build fewer of them. Buying new or used in a year is likely to be similar pricing.

Tough choice. If it is just a weekend toy, I'd go with the '69.

Tony

I average about 3500K a year on my Firebird right now. I would drive about the same in a new one. If I get my old 69 it would be a Saturday/Sunday nice sunny day car and maybe once in a blue moon be taken to work. Maybe 1000K a year if that. I want it more for the memories and cruising than a fun car. I guess I am looking for more than that. I want to have fun. Run one down the 1/4 mile a time or two. If I can get my old one for 25K that's what I am going to do. If not, I'll keep that money and put it toward a nice used 1SS. I should be able to pick one up late this summer/early fall for that or this winter. I am in no rush and have the time and space for it, along with the cash.
It's time to have fun with my saved money and that is what I am going to do.

Thats tuff man, but for the money I would get the 11! You could find a much cheaper old school camaro to restore down the road! Thats allot of cash for a car you dont know that much about anymore. I had to get ride of my 70 cutlass for my SS... I LOVED my 70 I built the hole car myself, but it was so much up keep I felt like I worked on it more then I drove it. What I like about the SS... I can drive it every day and do 1 mod at a time and still have a reliable bad ass car.

That's a tough one. Your old car will not be the same as it was. True, a '69 will continue to increase in value, but it will require time and money to get it back the way you want it. Would you rather spend that time enjoying a new ride? If I had the time, workshop, and tools I'd be tempted to go with the '69. Given a fully, correctly resto'd '69 vert and a new 2011 SS/RS vert, excluding the cost factor, it would be an even choice for me. From an investment perspective, I'd go with the '69 hands-down.

The gen5s are totally different animals, no less powerful and lots of nice touches too. Probably better MPGs, if you care. It's all what you're into!

I'll post up pics of me and my car back in 88 when it still was bone stock original to what it looks like now when I go see it in the next week or so when the weather warms up. Should be a shocking comparison from what I have been told.
