Oil Cooler delete questions

Well, I started tearing back down some to inspect things with my build. When I went to jack the car up, I noticed a small puddle of coolant underneath. After some tracing, it looks like it's coming out the large "plug" on the drivers side where the oil cooler line goes into the block.

Since I have fluids out, it seems like a good time to go ahead and just delete the whole thing. Is this all I need (full delete)?

http://www.improvedracing.com/coolin...ductsearchusen

And then, I couldn't find from a search. What size socket is needed to take that factory plug out of the block? Looks pretty big.

And for the new plug that comes in the kit, what is needed to put that in? I am guessing I have neither of these tools.

Thanks in advance!

I believe it was 22mm. I used a motorcycle axle removal tool or you can find some giant allen wrenches by googling.

Correct. If the thing is just gonna leak I'll just take it all off and eliminate the possibility.

Since you've done this Bo, do you remember the sizes of the factory plug, Or the new one?

the oil cooler/heater get's the motor up to temp faster...mostly for emmision's but a motor that warms up quickly does ultimately have less wear...

my plug has been weepin for a while now...traced it after gettin a wiff one day...my understanding they got cross threaded at the plant...

Bo - how did the delete affect your regular drivin temps..if at all?

Takes longer for oil temps to get up and it's about 240ish on the interstate.
Oil temps between 230-260* are ideal.

If your not road course racing the cooler is just something else to go bad imo. I have not seen oil temps much more the 220-240. Hell real drag racers back in the day would use 3 quarts of oil lol now we have improved racing scrapers and baffles..... much better option

Agreed on road racing. Extended high rpm racing will tax oil.

how likely is it that the plug is crossthreaded?

Since you have done this, do you know what tools I need for those large plugs? And does the cooler come out fine with the pan and everything still bolted in place?

Well, I'm sure it has been in there from the factory. But as mentioned above, I guess the factory crossthreaded some of them? I had no leaks before my cam swap, and didn't think I had messed with this any to cause a leak.

I left mine on the LS3 when I sold it, just blocked off the radiator bung with a vacuum cap and a hose clamp. New block already had a block off plate above the oil filter housing.
