Happy Birthday ...Chevrolet Corvette ...June 30,1953

Who has a Corvette Memory / Pic to Share...

The Corvette is unique in automotive history. No other car has ever achieved 60 years (and counting) of production, and no other car has come close to the romantic reputation of Chevrolet's powerful two-seat sports car.

The Corvette was invented in 1951 by GM designer Harley Earl, who was inspired by the great European sports cars of the day and wanted to create an American sports car that could compete and win at the race track. The name "Corvette" was borrowed from a line of small, fast navy ships used in World War II.

The first Corvette reached the end of the assembly line on June 30, 1953. The first 15 cars were built, all by hand, in the back of a customer delivery garage in Flint Michigan.

Each of these first-year Corvettes was a white roadster with red interior. The Corvette was made with fiberglass bodywork for light weight, but the first cars were produced with a comparatively weak 150 horsepower 6-cylinder engine and an automatic transmission. The result was more of a cruising car than a racing-inspired sports car.
Of the first 300 Corvettes, approximately 225 are known to exist today.

Long Live The Corvette!!

Happy birthday. But the 60 years of production can be argued by some. There is one model year that doesn't exist. I can't recall the actual year. GM just continued production of the previous model.

A 1983 Corvette was never produced off the line. I've had three and number three is a 1992 parked in the garage right next to the Camaro!

My first car was a 'mini-vette' aka the 1970 Opel GT
I used to kid folks that it was a full sized 'vette until I washed it
with hot water.

When I finish my Ph.D. next year and start working, a Corvette is the first thing I'm buying. I want to be one of the few men in their 20s driving a new Corvette that they paid for themselves.
