Cutting off the roller skates

Hey all. I just went to have 4 race star rims installed. 18X10.5 rear and 18X8.5 front. Discount tire pointed out to me that the rims won't fit on the front. I saw why, and remembered something about cutting off the roller skates. They had never heard of this and said it's not recommended.

My question is, can I cut these off and have no worries/issues with braking during normal/aggressive driving and of course drag racing?

Secondly, if it is safe to do this, how do you do it? Hacksaw or reciprocating saw?

Yes, it’s safe to cut them off. Only on there to fix brake noise

I used a 4" cut off wheel on an angle grinder. The hacksaw will work fine too.

Hey all. I have an electric handheld grinder with I believe a 4 inch wheel. I would imagine that this would cut off the roller skates quicker/easier than a reciprocating saw. Would you agree?

Does it have a grinding wheel or cutting wheel on it? Either will work, but the grinding wheel will take longer to mush through the steel. It willl probably make more heat too, for whatever that's worth. You can get cutting wheels on amazon for cheap.

Otherwise, I'd hacksaw them off before I cut them with a grinding wheel. YMMV

Just go to Harbor Freight and get the cutting wheels. I used them and worked real good.

Just buy the AC Delco replacement pads without the roller skates, $40.

Metal cut off disk on a hand held 4” grinder is the best way! Then switch to a grind wheel to smooth the rough edges. Then use a little extreme temp paint and a little artist brush to put a little paint on the bare steel. I did my fronts with 17” skinny’s and used this method on my Brembo pads/ skates. Just take your time because shit gets hot quick when cutting and grinding the pads. Make sure you take the pads off the calipers so you don’t accidentally nab something else other then the pads. Honestly after doing mine and the pads make no noise I think the skates are pointless and you’ll even shave a small amount of weight off without them.

Thanks everybody. I picked up a metal cut off disc today to use in place of the metal grinding disc.

Getting the front tires/rims put on Friday afternoon if I don't mess something up!!!

Word to the wise: If you remove the grinding wheel and it doesn't look like the cutting wheel will fit on the little base piece, remove the base piece and flip it over. Even on the cheaper HF grinders that mounting piece is reversible to fit more than just one application. I hope this makes sense.
