Ummmmmmm.......what?

You're comparing the average consumer to suicidal lemmings because the only real concern they have when buying a car is safety (at least partially as a result of Nader's activism)?

Most people don't really care what they're driving. They've got a few basic needs that are easily met, and there's no reason for them to drive something more specialized. If they've got extra money to blow, they buy what's marketed well. Are you seriously suggesting that they shouldn't buy FWD Impalas, Camrys, and Accords, and should buy muscle cars instead?

No thanks, I'd rather let the sheep be sheep, and I'll be a horsey or something...

what I said was that Americans are brainwashed into thinking that FWD is safer than RWD... its not... there's no proof to support the idea... in the age of stability management programs and anti-lock braking, a RWD Impala would be just as easy to keep under control in wet weather as a FWD Impala would be... the only thing that would be safer would be if it were available with AWD.

the only real reason to drive a FWD car is to get better gas mileage... and with Cylinder deactivation and dual mode hybrids working their way into the lineup, even this arguement is slowly working its way to the sideline... but at this moment in time, the FWD cars do get better mpg and that's really the only reason to own one... any other reason is just proving that mass marketing and propoganda can sell anything.

and no, I would not suggest that the masses buy a muscle car instead of a Camry, Accord or Impala... I would, however, suggest that they look at General Motors' full lineup and find something that suits them and their needs... rather than just saying, "well, the Camry has a five star rating in such and such's report, so I'm going to go buy that"... and this is why I called them "lemmings at the edge of a cliff"... at the edge of a rock that they're about to fall off of... and none the wiser of their situation.

you and I will always opt for something more specialized than the masses... we're enthusiasts on an enthusiast website... Fbodfather is an enthusiast as well... and having ridden with him in a red Pontiac rental car, I can honestly say that he's a specialty car lover, too... lol... so while rental fleets and cookie cutter neighborhoods will be full of FWD Impalas, my garage will be full of cars like these:

Call it the CIII-N (Chevy III Nova). Allow enough room to stuff a smallblock in there.

have I never posted pics of the shop before? 60'x60' red shop with concrete and huge garage doors on either end? I'll have to go take some pics, label all the cars and post them up

I totaly agree with you, those 07/08 Impalas are good and great first cars cheap too. and is so played out in philly, every corner a turn IMPALAS, red IMPALA, IMPALA, COP IMPALAS...damn....lol, I was one of the lucky ones to get a charger, srt8 at that to

I think GM will always manufacture RWD cars from this point forward. Now that there's the technology and the demand enabled by the technology, there's no reason GM would pull the plug on RWD in the mad dash to 35 MPG CAFE in 2020. 6th gen Camaro roll on...

There has been talk of moving the Solstice and Sky to the upcomng Alpha platform, which is rumored to underpin the Caddy 3-series fighter and possibly a Pontiac or Chevy version. Alpha is rumored to be somewhat of an evolution of the Kappa platform (which is what the Sky and Solstice are currently based on) that allows for flexible sizes (much like Zeta) so what you're looking for could very well happen.

I think what we'll see is two RWD platforms: alpha for small to medium RWD cars (everything from small roadsters like the Solstice up to 3-series size cars) and Zeta for medium to large RWD cars (Camaro size and upwards) and possibly keeping the Vette on its own unique platform.

This would be great... what ever happened to the XLR because the Corvette platform wasn't always unique... i'd get that small RWD car though... especially if it cost about as much as a cobalt does now...

Its getting a refresh but beyond that...who knows. It isn't exactly Cadillac's big seller, and I've heard rumors it may not make it around for a next generation. Maybe we'll see a Zeta-based large 2 seater. Or we could see another one on the Vette's C7 platform. Anything could happen with the XLR.
