PSB #2011-10

TO: Goodyear Contract Dealers, Goodyear Canada Inc. Dealers, Goodyear Company Owned Stores

Subject: Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 Summer Tires Not Recommended for Winter Use

Goodyear F1 Supercar G:2’s are D.O.T. approved ultra high performance summer tires with track capability. The rubber used in these tires loses flexibility and may develop surface cracks in the tire tread/shoulder area at colder temperatures. Goodyear does not recommend using these high performance summer tires when temperatures drop to approximately 40 deg F (5 deg C) or below, or in snow/ice conditions.

Tire Storage
Follow the general tire storage recommendations in Product Service Bulletin 2010-21, Proper Procedures for the Storage of Tires. Further, it is recommended for these tires to be stored indoors at temperatures above 20 deg F (-7 deg C) when not in use. If the tires have been subject to 20 deg F (-7 deg C) or less, let them warm up in a heated space to at least 40 deg F for 24 hours or more before installation or driving the vehicle. Inflate the tires only after they have been warmed above 40 deg F (5 deg C). Do not place tires near heaters or heating devices used to warm the room where the tires are stored. Do not apply heat or blow heated air directly on the tires. Always inspect tires before use after storage periods as outlined in the Proper Procedures for the Storage of Tires bulletin.

Thank you for this bulletin. It really IS warning those in cold weather that you should not drive in cold conditions. You should not even keep the tires INFLATED at cold temperatures. Thusly, I imagine keeping them ON the car with the weight of the car at 20 degrees could produce irreversible damage even once the weather gets back up to >40 degrees. So, Its a question of storage too. I know they meant "warehouse" storage of unmounted tires, but I can only assume mounted, inflated tires with 2 tons sitting on them could be BAAAAD. Now I guess I need a propane garage heater. I'm glad my garage is at least insulated! Still need to know what WINTER tires might fit and work on a cheaper rim. If anyone figgers that one out... lemme (us) know! Thanks Scott! ET al.

Take it from me who has had a C5 Corvette with goodyear F1 tires on it. IT IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. It was not fun, trac. control going off constanly the car not being able to do a simple 3 point turn in a graded street. Taking off from a light the cavalier next to me blew my doors off. I drove it like that for 1 winter and never again, thats where my winter beater came in.

Simply put the tires were designed for summer use. if you intend on driving in sub-climate conditions get the proper tires suited for that kind of driving conditions. Its like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

Thanks Scott...
I guess the first mod will be a set of tires for the 2012 winter months...
I knew there was a reason I wanted both sets of rims....( for different tires for the track)
Ill have to save my pennys for sure.

My only concern is in regards to storage (with the tires obviously on the vehicle). I'm just going to take my chances during the winter storage months, wait until temps and the tires warm up per the instruction, and inspect the tires for cracks/etc. My gut tells me this will be a non issue, but we'll see.

OK, fair enough. It would be a nice gesture if some type of all temperature tires were optional. Sometimes down here it will be <20 degrees at night and 60+ in the afternoon.

One time in Colorado Springs I played tennis all afternoon in shorts and a T shirt, then we took in a movie after the game and it was a serious blizzard when we walked out of the theater. In many places I would worry about damage to these tires except in June, July, and August.

I do tend to drive at night and in the snow.

Imagine being at a dealership looking at one when the temp is below 40. "Congratulations on your new purchase, we can't recommend you drive it right now though, you see the tires..."

Now I'm really wondering what a spare set of rims would cost.

My guess is both sets will be orderable at some given point in time.
Kinda wish we could add the opposite set of rims without tires to the zl1 order.

So what kind of tires will you guys be using if it's below freezing at night where you live ?

Warm days and freezing nights make the stock tires unhappy.

Granted its on my G8 GT but I am running Continental extreme DWS's and have been very pleased with them. We routinely hover in the low teens during the cold months. Are you worried about snow or just cold weather performance?

I have HOPE for winter tires and CHANGE for them is coming. So much for HOPE & CHANGE.

We WILL be needing this figured out. And, it will give you a choice of four tires to carry as spares..... but I don't think you can put 305's on the front LOL

I'm just concerned about not damaging my tires because it gets cold and I still feel like driving.

I do know how to drive snow & ice, but don't have to worry about that very often this far South.

Edit: That tire has some nice specs Mac. Thanks for the recommendation. I have it bookmarked.
