WHIPPLE Belt slapping...

So just switched over to 8 rib set up and grip tech pulley...

Shredded a green belt the other day with 50 miles and about 3 pulls on it. Seems like I am getting some belt slap. Under hard load the tensioner is pushing over and hitting the belt (see picture). Tensioner is a year old, been trying a few things when I was a 6 rib set up. Tensioner does not see any weaker than when it was new.

I have adjusted the idler to remove and slack.
I can try a 1/2" shorter belt, if I can get it to fix.
I was thinking about trying a RPM belt which would be the same length belt I have now.

What are you high PSI guys doing to prevent this???

Your tensioner is improperly adjusted and you need to reinstall the idler pulley. You may even need to go down to the next belt size. Move the idler adjustment fully to the right. The “greenbelt” has a lot of stretch so with your current adjustment the belt will contact itself under high load. Whipple has 2 different tensioner adjustments based upon model year check their PDF instructions. If I can remember for the 2014 it’s 1&1/2 to 2 inches. You will get better contact with the 4 inch whipple pulley and running overdrive crank pulley. You may also consider the RPM belt it may have less stretch...

Thanks for your input Pro-tuned

What do you mean the tensioner is improperly adjusted?-meaning that the tensioner idler needs to go more to left and be sitting at the 7:00 position?

If I add the idler back on it actually pushed the belt closer to the tensioner.

I can try the shorter belt and that may move the lower idler more to the right. Don't I want it moved to the left as much as possible with the shorter belt to keep tension on the belt and way from the other belt?

I looked over the whipple instructions and I could not find anything about the 2 adjustments for the tensioner? do you have the link? I seen online with other kits there are a few extra holes on the bracket so you can move the tensioner clockwise. My bracket does not have the extra holes. I can drill some.

The RPM does not come in a smaller size than the size I already have in the green belt. Its either 1" longer or 1" shorter

I am already running an 10% overdrive balancer

I am up in Colorado so the blower has to work harder to make boost. Car lost 2.5-3 psi from Phoenix to Denver.

3" griptech with 10% OD should be making around 13.5 psi. Haven't been able to log a full pull with this combo yet.

Previous made 11.5 psi with an 3.25" and stock balancer

Do not install the upper Idler, install a shorter belt and use the lower sliding Idler pulley to both install the new belt then wind the tensioner as tight as you can.

Glad to hear from Jannetty Racing, I know you guys have a lot of experience!

I can not find the post, but didn't you guys use a upper idler and routed the belt over it? Did that help at all?

Sorry as your facing the engine pulley all the way to the right almost under the supercharger. Do not adjust the idler pulley under the TB once you move it all the way right. Tensioner is measured by the gap on top. Do not route the belt on the opposite side. Look at page 53 of the instructions para 138. Tells you 2” gap on your tensioner. This is the distance between your red and blue line. This works for mine.

New 1/2" shorter belt ordered.

Wish they made a RPM belt in in the shorter size

Okay hopefully the shorter belt will help with the load on the tensioner

Are you running a 10% OD damper? What's your current belt length?

Yeah I am 10% OD with 3.0

I just switched to K080952HD which is 95.75" outside circumference

The K080956HD is 96.25" Outside circumference

With your set up the belts I think may work would be
K100950HD 95.625"
or
K100953HD 95.875
