SimTD V2X assessment project gets 20 automobiles from Ford

Ford is looking to the future by contributing 20 automobiles to the Daimler-helmed simTD V2X technology project, presently happening in the Rhine-Main region of Germany. The project is testing new V2X systems on 120 different automobiles in real-world situations. Have you been looking to sell or buy a used or new van? If this seems like you, get a quote at Gus Johnson Ford.

Special design to be tested

V2X refers to technology designed to allow for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. It has the potential of eliminating most traffic accidents, while at the same time allowing crowded traffic to move at a much faster speed and with much greater mobility.

There are 120 automobiles that will be tested in the undertaking. They will have 20 different driver assistance systems in them too.

Ford's contribution is not about raising instant equity. Auto makers worldwide are looking to the future to meet fuel economy standards and to address the needs of an increasingly-crowded environment.

At this point, the simTD venture partners, along with engineers from Ford’s European Research Center in Aachen, Germany, have tested these technologies only in controlled environments. The simTD V2X venture will put those systems to the check in real-life situations, on the roads and highways that surround Frankfurt, Germany.

Ford’s goal for mobility

In February, Ford CEO Bill Ford publicized the “Blueprint for Mobility” at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. As a courtesy, Ford is working on getting rid of the overcrowded streets and all the traffic. The goals show all of Ford’s strategies to work with mobility by 2025, and the goals are very clear.

Looking at systems

Among the systems presently being tested by the simTD V2X venture contains:

First, there is the Electronic Brake Light Technology. It will send a signal to the vehicles behind it notifying them if the car has pressed on the brake. This is specifically helpful because some drivers have their vision blocked.

The Obstacle Warning System alerts vehicles of its proximity to traffic or other obstacles, letting it compensate accordingly.

There are traffic management centers that give data about traffic, traffic control signs and speed limit changes. The Traffic sign Assistance Technology communicates with these centers.

Automobiles can book and pay for parking while driving if they have in-vehicle web access.

Ford taking care of effort

The effort has been going on for quite a while. In fact, 100 state fleet automobiles were given sensors to collect traffic data by the Minnesota DOT and Ford in collaboration in 2004.

There was a Ford multi-city tour in 2010 to show the V2X technology off. The public was pretty looking forward to it.
