Catch Can Overflow?

I finally bit the bullet and ordered an Elite catch can yesterday. I have been reading all the posts about them. Some folks claim that they fill up pretty fast especially in the colder months when you get more condensation.

My question is, what happens if the catch can fills all the way up? Is there a valve that keeps the liquid from getting sucked into the engine? If the engine did pull in the liquid goo I imagine some pretty horrific things could happen.

There is no "overflow" valve on the Elite or any other that I have seen.

You just have to get in the habit of checking it. Some check when they change the oil, others every few fill-ups.

Check it often early on. You'll get a feel for how fast yours fills up.

Drain it EVERYTIME you change the oil. Should never have a prolem.

That was my plan, but some on here claim that theirs were nearly full after just a few hundred miles!

That is not normal. If you fill up a catch can in a few hundred miles there is something going on with your engine.

Ok, good to know. I'll probably check it a lot at first to get a feel for it.

After you first install a catch can it is a good idea to check it regularly until you establish how much fluid you are capturing. Most of the times draining it every oil change turns out to be fine but every engine is different.

Elite Catch Can. LFX engine. I get .25 - .30 oz every 700-800 miles. If you change your oil at 6k that's less than 2.5 oz of oil at each oil change. I'd be shocked to see a full can between oil changes but I guess it depends on how hard you drive it.

A lot of it also depends on the humidity in your area and the number of short trips you make without getting the engine up to temp, which causes more condensation to sit around in the crankcase and then it ends up in the catch can, filling it up quickly.

And this!

During the colder months, I recommend checking on it periodically. They do have the potential to get full and in which case it will not necessarily harm anything, but will be just like not having one at all..

Here is a thread from a while back that shows our finding on an LLT during the winter months.

Remember to check your catch can

Feel free to call, PM or email me with questions.

Best regards,

Tyler

Those that change/check it at each fill-up must have no nerves in their hands. That thing gets HOT! I just empty mine at the end of each oil change session (once it has cooled off again).

I've put on about 7500 miles since my last oil change/catch can emptying.

Here's what I emptied out of it yesterday:
