Random P0008?
I got the P0008 code last week while on the interstate car ran poor. I get home, clear the code. Car has been running fine since. I've put about 400 miles on it with no issue. My build date is 01/10 and I have 105k. I have had no issues with this car other than this. Could it be something other than the chains? Am I delaying the inevitable? I ordered the Cloyes timing chain kit but since it is running fine I don't know if I should tear into it just yet. Opinions please. Thanks!

If you have the kit and skill to do it I would. While it is a pain to tear into the engine to replace, waiting and possibly having a catastrophic failure in the future when you could have avoided it by replacing it earlier would be a bigger one.

I have the next 2 days off from work so I will probably tear into it. I can still hear my Dad saying if it ain't broke don't fix it because it has run so good after I cleared the code. With my build date I feel that they will need to be done at some point anyway. I have read almost every post about these chains and I am confident that I can do it. Just want to make sure it wouldn't be something else.

I mean, either way the V6s are interference engines. On the unlikely chance they do actually fail, you're out a majority of the motor. Being that you're a 2010 there's no chance you have the updated chains so I'd say swap them when you are comfortable and have time.

Is there a step by step for the chains in this forum? I have found them for some of the other vehicles like the Cadillac but not the Camaro. I have looked at so many threads on these chains and I am confident that I can do it. Mainly torque specs is what i need.

This thread has some. https://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=450055
Based on that, I'd say message Magnum and see if you can get the manual from him.

UPDATE:
Chains were replaced with the Cloyes kit. ALL of the tensioners were out all the way. I only used Mobile One oil and changed it when computer was at 30%. I have gone almost 8k between oil changes. Motor was very clean. 105k miles. I only had the P0008 code one time. This is a big job but you need a good place to do it and plenty of time. Don't rush. |

GM re-flashed PCM's for no more than 5k oil changes. I don't even go that far.
