Am I the only one with a Onstar Data Plan
My Freebie portion ran out so I am trying the $ 10 mo. 1 GB plan. I opted in for messages when it gets low. Are others using the data plan or am I the only sucker in town?

I already have a data plan on my phone. Why would I need another one?

No, I do the monthly $10 plan as well. I like roaming around with a network named "Surveillance Van 7".

Why do you need a data plan with Onstar? Or phone minutes?
Onstar is for emergencies and diagnostics. Your phone is for all that other stuff. |

It is a wifi hot spot, so can be used like any other one. For example, if my passenger has a tablet or laptop they want to use, they can connect to the web through it.

Once the trial was over for me. That was it. I don't see the need for it. I'm too busy driving, to worry about that.

if i had a co pilot in the car all the time i would probably subscribe to data; as i am the only one in the car most of the time it doesn't make much sense for me to have it.

If you use WAZE, it pulls a lot of CPU and this takes battery (at least on my Android phone) and if the phone also has to keep attaching to a cell tower, that will take juice as well. My phone will get hot and start shutting off apps (like WAZE) after a certain amount of time - less than it takes for me to get to work, sadly. Connecting to wifi significantly lessens the burden on the phone and it never gets hot and shuts down apps. At least, that is my experience.

If they had the plan through Verizon I'd consider it. But it's through AT&T and the coverage was terrible compared to my Verizon cell phone.

The data is intriguing. I have not used it yet, but I am on AT&T and this data is AT&T, so not sure if a better signal would be had keeping it.
OnStar is on this vehicle for now, but I keep it on my Hummer. Can't tell you how it came in handy when in an accident (totaled my first Hummer by a jack ass blowing through a stop sign). I see OnStar as good for emergency and diagnostics, not much else. Don't need the turn by turn navigation, etc. It used to be a 1 year free trial with OnStar, now it is down to a 1 month and if you bitch about it, they will extend it to 3 months. I will worry about this as the trial draws to an end.

I subscribe to the OnStar Wi-Fi hotspot unlimited data plan specifically because it is through AT&T. My personal mobile phone is through Sprint. The coverage around my home with Sprint is fine, but near work and driving around town or on road trips my experience has been that AT&T provides a more reliable signal. I don't pay for the Wi-Fi hotspot option on my phone, but passengers can connect to my OnStar hotspot.
Works pretty well for me so far!

I have it. I enjoy the remote start feature and key fob features from the phone. It comes in handy frequently actually
