Am I Cammed?

I’m the second owner of an 10’ SS and I can not tell if the previous owner has an aftermarket cam in this car or not. Is their a way to check without taking it out?

I’ve noticed and have been told by others that the car sounds choppy and I thought so too. Maybe these cars naturally sound choppy, idk. Axleback exhaust and headers make it more noticeable. I bought a cam package and don’t want to change it out if I already have an oversized cam in it already. I can tell the previous owner had headers as well due to the o2 sensor extensions lol....

Also I notice the car really doesn’t have any buck or surging like most complain about when camming. It isles at about 800-900rpm I believe and have no driving struggles. Maybe I’m just used to it? The car also shakes a tiny bit at idle. Back and forth.

Any thoughts?

What exactly do you mean by rough? I do have a small shake every few seconds during idle sitting still I notice it, but nothing extreme.

How would he know that the car is cammed if he has nothing to compare it to?

FREY, You can take this any way you want.....but IMO, you cannot properly build around a cammed engine if you don't know the specs of that cam.

Best of luck.....whatever you do!

You might have a tune with some ghost cam effect.

The stock cam has some chop to it, especially with exhaust work done.

OP I had the exact same thing. Can’t remember about when it was stock but definitely after headers and tune it had a little lumpy idle. I remember my mother asking what was wrong with my car? Lol. I said big powerful engine! I’m sure my tuner put a bit of ghost cam effect in but I think it would do that a little anyway

If you want to know for sure you could get a dial indicator, pop a valve cover and measure valve lift.

Exactly what I would do, if you find it have a different lift than stock, then you would want to take a look at the end of the camshaft itself, should be some info there to find the specs, and who made the cam. Good luck.
