Thinking Ahead: SSX Wheels and other tire and rim alts for ZL1 during cooler months

Let's not have any talk like that, there are tires everywhere, and at worst you just run the ones that come on the car in the summer, and when it gets cold, you get some cold weather tires & use them for a couple of seasons then swap again. It's not like you're losing anything except storage space for a set of tires.


Besides that, it's a great excuse to get a second set of rims. Maybe some 315s for the back. That would help make up for the lack of stickiness in the compound, plus it just looks freakin' cool.

my .02 on this topic would be find a cheaper set of 9" on all four corners black simialr spoke rims and get soem all season tires.

buying forged wide rear width rims to run winter tires on is not cost effective IMO. Not to mention you can't buy winter tire's in really wide widths. the added wheel wieght of cast rims should be a non issue in those seasons as how to really push a car in cold temps.

Its tough to find good wide winter tires.... trust me I looked all over.

It comes down to the fact that most people will choose a narrower tire in the winter so the tires have a easier time "cutting" through the snow. Thats why I was curious if you where worried about snow or just cold. Any good All season should be perfect for your situation!

Because mine will be an every day driver, I'm ordering wheels and winter tires as soon as I can, like June or July. Here in Pittsburgh we've had plenty of days where the temperature has been well below 40 since early October. We even had snow on Halloween. I plan on storing my summer tires on the rims in my heated basment, where I have plenty of room. I was thinking about ordering the SSX wheels, but I'm sure I can get something more reasonable from Tire Rack. GM will more than likely charge an arm and a leg, and it's just for the winter months anyway.

My plan is to run my Pirelli winter tires in stock SS sizes on the aftermarket wheels I already have for my SS. I figure that the bolt pattern should be the same and they will look very similar to the standard black wheels.

Alternatively, I plan to pick up a beater for the worst days.

The new ZL1 is the same bolt pattern as the SS. Scarallo Motorsport Wheels has already been making the 20x10 and 20x11 for the regular Camaro, all along.

The 20x10 in the front works flawlessly and really helps the cars ability to turn into a corner much better then the narrower tires and wheels that come ont he SS. Plus, the 20x11 on the rear helps put the power down a ton better.

We are quite proud that the ZL1 is coming with the exact setup from the factory that we had already tested and tuned ahead of the factory for these cars.

The factory is running a 285-35-20 on the front and a 305-35-20 on the rear, in a non all season tire. Those are relatively new tire sizes.
We have been running a 275-40-20 in the front, which is the same size as the factory rear tire for the SS, and a 315-35-20 in the rear which is the next step wider then the ZL1 tire.

I tried searching the Proxes STII's on the Toyo site and found them under the SUV/Light Truck category. Are they designed for SUV use and if so how would they be on a ZL1? Sorry Mac being the bearer of bad news but I too want a alternate to the F1's

They do look promising 'Mac.

Here is an excerpt from the Toyo page, wilmaya.

"The Proxes ST II is M&S rated and available in V, W, and Y speed ratings. It is available in a broad range of OE and plus fitment sizes, ranging from 16- to 26-inches in diameter."

Y speed ratings go up to 186 mph, so I think they aren't just an SUV tire.

Continental has the DWS in 275/40-20 for the front and 315/35-20 for the rear. These are all season tires. The diameter is nearly identical. The rear is only 10mm wider (3/8") than the 305's which are stock. Nitto has the Invo's in the same sizes.
