Even the Michelins struggle in the cold...
So, I decided to drive my 1LE to work on Tuesday instead of driving my truck, even though it was 26 degrees F out.
After taking 10 min to get to Interstate 40 from my house, I was accelerating through 2nd gear up the on ramp to the interstate. It is a 65 zone, but most folks do 80. At 60 in second gear I punched it to try and merge quickly. To my astonishment, the rear wheels lost traction and I slid into the next lane. Had to change my shorts when I got to work. Even though these Michelins don't burst in the cold like the Goodyears are reported to do, they still need quite a bit of heat before you can get on her... Lesson learned. Either drive Little Red like an old lady when it is below 35F, or take my Silverado...

Cold weather is always a bad recipe for disaster with the wrong tires. I wouldn't try aggressive moves with my car unless I know for sure the tires are rated for the condition. If you're driving on MPSS, they are still summer tires.

I almost went with PSSs but went with AS3s. They are waiting to be installed. Now when I install my SLP 500whp may actually be somewhat manageable as long as there is no snow on the ground.

It should be noted, that the Good Years lose traction badly, even when 10C (45F), my main point being, above freezing point, as opposed to the OP's sub freezing point.
I've lost traction in 2nd badly with full traction control on, even a bid of skid in 3rd, at 40F-45F range, with the OEM Good Years. The OP SteveV is reporting significant sub freezing point, which seriously is game over for any summer tire. I seriously doubt the Michelins would have lost it as badly as the Goodyears at 10C above freezing point, is my main point here. Or do they??? |

I've been experiencing the exact same issues. Good thing down here in El Paso it doesn't snow, but below 50F my tires have very little traction the car even shakes if you slight push the gas...

40 degree weather with traction control on will spin my used up Goodyears all the way from rolling in 1st through second on mine. I know it is worse in Comp mode. Gives me an idea what a ZL1 must be like all the time.

I'm glad you were not in an accident. These cars are really not made to be driving in near or sub freezing temps. It's been in the upper 40s here in the mornings and I can notice a big difference with the PSS tires, especially the rear tires' ability to grip. It's much harder for me to break traction when the tires are cold with these that with Goodyears. To be fair, had you had the stock tires, you would not even be able to drive it at that temp or risk getting a blow out.

The cold and rain plays hell with my tire pressure sensors too. Car keeps telling me that all my tires are at 26, checked and each one was at least at 30. Always having trouble with them, very annoying.
