You are correct that any Snell rated helmet is needed for 13.99 or quicker. The reason for the post was for people who usually ask about the difference between a 'M' rated helmet and a 'SA' rated helmet referenced in my previous post.

Snell M are fine for 13.99 and quicker as you have stated. Most NHRA bodies will let you run Snell M's with cars quicker than 9.99, but if you are running an open cockpit car or a supercharged class car, it needs to be a SA. Some tracks in both the southeast and northeast request a SA with fast rollcage cars. SA helmets offers superior rollcage impact protection.

NHRA and IHRA rules state a helmet is required for any car 13.99 or quicker. I attend Friday Night Street Legals all the time at my home track. Snell 2005 is the requirement not sure what the rules are in Geogia. I am bringing my Snell 2005 cause I know it's all good.

SA has Fireproof materials used. good to 7.5 seconds.

M is Motorcycle - has crash protection but no fireproof materials. Not for use going faster than 9.99

K is for kart (go kart) - these typically aren't allowed.

you are o.k. with snell 2005 M or SA helmets for most cars at the Fest.

Sorry, but I am correct. I have the NHRA Drag racing rules right in front of me. Snell 2005 rating helmet for 13.99 & quicker. Snell 2005 full faced for 9.99 & quicker. If the track is an NHRA sanctioned facility they have to follow those rules.

I have a DOT helmet and have never been turned down by any track. Its new purchased last year and I was racing my 95 which was a low 10 second car. This is what I will be bringing with me and I guess if it isnt good enough I will sit on the side lines :(

You are right about everthing in the known universe above, I am not arguing that. There is an NHRA rule book sitting here too. The reality is if you have a car fast enough to run 9's or faster and show up with a Snell M helmet, you may not be allowed to run. SA offers superior fire protection AND rollbar multi impact resistance. SA is required for the faster NHRA classes. e.g.:

"2010 NHRA Rule Amendments
As of March 1, 2010

HELMET (1/13/2010)
Full-face Snell SA2000, SA2005, or SFI 31.2A helmet mandatory."

For those of you who think you can "get by" with a DOT helmet, then have at it. Remember the old Bell Helmet ad - "If you have a $10 head, get a $10 helmet".

The ultimate decider of safety is you, the driver.

'nuff said on this thread.

OKAY, just got off the phone with Tim from SGMP.....

I'm calling back around noon to get the specific specifics, so to say, but, bottom line on the drag strip is:

14 second and slower = no helmet required

14 second and faster = helmet required

SNELL 2005 is fine (again, more specifics to come this afternoon)

I'm guessing if we have people with 9 second cars that they built it for a reason and know what they're talking about!

Road course:

HELMET REQUIRED, period!

I know there is excellent information in this thread from members that drive at track events and there are set rules out there, i.e. NHRA, IHRA, but thought it would be a good idea to call the track where the fest will be taking place and find out for sure.

I have a feeling that over the next month this issue is going to be beaten to a pulp.

Thanks for checking into that with Tim.

Ah, yes. You get the real reason why we buy the best helmets we can.

Related note: We were the first ones to use a HANS device for offshore boats and everyone thought it was a joke until a very experienced driver at one of the races broke his neck and died. Now everyone in the Extreme class uses them.

Thanks Again for checking with Tim...
