Nightfall, since the frontal area and drag coefficient are independent of transmission and engine type (OK, some minor differences due to front end geometry), the force and power numbers I calculated are for any camaro.

These numbers are theoretical though, right? The statement that the car could top out at 286 in 6th gear seems a bit far fetched. Other than the governor installed on the vehicle, what other factors are there that would keep it from reaching that speed?

Power to overcome drag, friction, and rolling resistance?

To reach those speeds, the cars would need to be producing something like 1500 hp at the crank. So when they're modified that much, it hardly matters which one made more power stock.

As for why the V6 is faster, I made a slight mistake in my post. Gearing is essentially the same for both the V6 and V8 autos. But the V6 engine has a higher redline, which is just another way of saying that it can spin faster. So since the tires have the same outer diameter, and the transmission ratios are the same in the higher gears, the engine that spins faster will make the car go faster if it has the power to overcome drag.

RPMs, gearing, and tire size determine the maximum possible speed for a car. Power and drag determine if it can reach that speed. But if you don't have enough space to do it safely, then it doesn't really matter how fast the car can go.

I'm not sure how you can safely go 286 mph no matter what the situation, other than in some sort of commercial aircraft. But, I get your point. I've not had mine over 90. People say I drive like an old man and I just tell them "Maybe, but I sure look goooood goin' slow, don't I?"

Don't forget top fuel dragsters and funny cars do 320 mph in 4 sec. But they're designed to produce a ton of downforce to keep the car from flying away.

I read somewhere that a Formula 1 race car at speeds over 200mph could actually drive upside down without falling because of the downforce being applied at those speeds.

I've never hit 41 in 1st. It seems to redline at 38. 2nd seems to be about right but 106 seems to be where I'm hitting the redline in 3rd. I would love to finally have a 1/4 mile run where I'm smacking into my redline at the finish line. As for the rest,

Here's a vid of my v6 manual at a 5000' long runway. Some of you have seen this one before. I shut it down at 4000' leaving me 1000' to safely brake.

I shifted at redline. Pay attention to where my son and I call out 110

So my programmer says find an open road 1/2 mile or so and do 0 - 5000 rpms 3 times with linear throttle. Repeat maximize 5500 2nd recording session. So I did a test run. I made it to 4900 and was doing 131 kms (81.4 mph). Decided to bail on Data logging after that when about a minute later a state trooper goes by me in the left lane giving me the evil eye . Was only 58 mph at that time. I now have permission to use 2nd gear .

lets see...common sense, self preservation, the desire to keep ones drivers liscence, lack of money to build another motor just to name a few.
