E85 just more than gas?

A friend of mine did this.. put two gallons in his old 92 Explorer to "clean it up a little"

The two gallons did not affect the engine's running at all. It idled and ran just as smooth as ever. Cold start was fine too.

how high a percentage I could run without any harm to the engine? If I tried this method?

30% will shift the Long term fuel trims around 8%, any more than 15% LTFT's will pop a CEL for too high positive fuel trims. That'd be around 45% E or so if your trims are close to zero.

1:1 E85 and E10 93 is E47 and 99 octane. Requires around 16% more fueling though.

2:1 E10 93 and E85 is E35 and 97 octane, it'll need 10-11% more fuel. I wouldn't go more than that without a tune for it.

The LTFT's carry over to WOT as well but don't flog it right away until they adjust. Since E85 is 105 octane it'll raise your 93 to about 96 octane at 30% E. No more KR on a stock tune.

Here's a calculator.

You really need the ability to log your fueling though.

I've heard that E85 can eat up the O-rings used in your fuel lines, which is why aftermarket pumps specify if they're for E85 or not. (No idea if this is true..)

It is true. Many rubber compounds don't play well with high levels of ethanol, for a long period. Several places are moving to E15 which is causing problems for some folks.

No issues in the Camaro fuel system. I have read that the SS & ZL1 pumps are E85 rated, they just scrapped the FlexFuel on us before production began.
Ran E85 in my WS6 for years, now Phat Bee is addicted. Proper mods required of course for correct fueling. E85 requires ~30% more fuel.

Thanks for the input. It's not like I'm going to be dumping gallons and gallons of E85 into the tank. Just wondering since the highest grade fuel I can get here is 91 and it's diluted 10% ethanol already In it. I already don't get the best mileage with the 91 & 10% blend added. Just wanted to run like 2 or 3 gallons of E85 with the base 91. Just want to make sure I don't fry anything or erode fuel lines etc..
