Well done getting the laptop back. Glad it's back in your mom's possession.

Keep a few things in mind.

Going off what we know these people could very well be victims as well. Their story is that they purchased it for $700 from a flea market. The detective stated that the entire family had very little knowledge of computers and how they functioned. While I have a difficult time believing that you could take receipt of a laptop that still contains personal data on it, and not believe that it has history to be a stretch... it is a possible scenario. Not to mention this entire time they didn't delete a single thing off of the laptop including the pictures of my wedding that my mother had saved on the desktop.

The one I want is the person in the TSA, whom we entrust with the safety of millions of travelers. Lets pray that the police are able to track it back to this individual/group.

-Edit-

Also, once we take receipt of the laptop from the police, I will be doing my own investigation on the laptop to see if the person who stole it used it prior to being sold.

Oh so that's what you do for a living. Real nice work.

we started out on friday afternoon, it was a hot colorless
day in L.A. and the crackers in my pocket from Tuesdays
soup had turned to dust.

Playing devil's advocate, it might be the relatives of the person from the TSA...

I need to pick your brain at some point.

Anything is possible. I'd prefer they aren't related. People are more inclined to report those whom they don't have any emotional ties to.

Feel free to hit me up anytime. Maybe grab a beer.

In short of making sure it's on you at all times, nothing. There is no such thing as a secure computer. Just one that takes a little more time to crack.

For starters, I would suggest:

  • Biometric authentication (a lot of laptops have these installed) OR
  • 14-16 character passwords with a mix of special, upper and lower keys
  • If your at a public place, a kensington lock to your kensington security slot (most laptops have these)
  • Make sure your antivirus and firewall permissions are updated. (For windows, use Security Essentials - it's free and works really well)

I work in the same field and I absolutely agree with everything said above about security also for those that are paranoid about web cams I'm going to make a recommendation. If you are afraid of people hacking your web cam and remotely activating it but still want to use one, buy a computer with out one built in and buy a usb camera that way you can disconnect it when not in use.

We just recently got a batch of new laptops for the office with built in cameras and as part of the security testing, after about 20 minutes i was able to activate the camera with out the users knowing. The process to do it was documented in 8 easy steps.

There is never a 100% secure computer only one that takes longer to access
