But how long do you have to maintain a speed before it kicks in?

My AFM must be really sensitive b/c it kicks in whenever I let off of the gas and sometimes when I decrease my rate of acceleration (as in push the gas in to accelerate then let off a little to decrease rate of acceleration). It doesn't just happen when I cruise.

I agree. Mine does it at low and high speeds and is very bothersome (to me). I won't speak for anyone else, which it seems a lot of other posters are doing....

Can't anyone tell us the actual technical details behind the AFM behavior? Specifically what speeds and throttle it kicks in at, etc.,? Does riding in "M" Sport Mode disable it?

I didnt pay much attention to it until I read this thread. Now I definetly notice it and its annoying. Since its my daily driver and I drive 50 miles per day I like the fuel economy but Im thinkin I may have to have it turned off at lower speeds like others have done.

AFM will kick in at 1200 rpm in any gear if you're not on the throttle. Just put the shifter in M and after you use a tapshift button to up shift or downshift at any speed, in any gear, the AFM will be defeated until you come out of M. Yes, you will have to hit a button to up shift all the time. It will automatically go to 2nd when you come to a stop.
