Oil pump fixes?

Hey there, so in the process of buying my '17 ZL1, should be picking her up on Tuesday. I've been reading and researching a bunch about issues people see to have with the ZL1 and it seems like around 60% of people are seeing oil pump failures sub 6k miles. Has anyone found a fix to avoid this issue as it is a pretty significant and serious issue that I would like to get hashed out before it happens...I will only have around 2 years of powertrain warranty left, so if I can find a good fix from one of you insightful fellas it seems logical to void that warranty to eliminate potential future harm. Thank you, God bless.

Seems to be a crap shoot who will have an issue. I have a 17 with ~11,400 miles on it and still runs good, but could go bad on my way home today. No way to know. I doubt the dealer will swap it out for the new ones til yours goes bad or a service bulletin or recall takes place.

ps, you might want to update your thread, you put fuel pump instead of oil

It's pretty rare overall to have happen. It's a problem with all cars really. A faulty oil pump usually goes early on. I've seen it on everything from brand new Honda to Audis to Corvettes to Minivans. Usually in the first couple thousand miles. If you have a good one leave it.

That's a promising, then. Mine has around 8300 miles on it, no signs of any issues yet. Thank you, I appreciate it.

If it was 60% failures there would have been a recall...some of our members are having the entire engine replaced with a catastrophic failure. GM is going to follow the money & the failure rate with oil pumps used in our ZL1 & other models is actually a very small percentage.

I couldn't imagine the thread drama if 1/2 of us were losing oil pumps!!

It's only for build dates between July and early November of 2017. Melling has made many revisions to the pump, and I don't think we've seen any 2018's and up with failed pumps.

Wrong. Literally a thread a few down from this one that has a poll for failed oil pumps and 11 people so far with 2018's have responded. You guys need to quit spewing this shit out without having any knowledge. 60% is wrong and so is your comment.

Calm down there, keyboard cowboy.

I will correct my post and say build dates instead of model years. There will be model year 2018 ZL1's built in late 2017.

Lol yeah definitely not 60%, join the gt350 Facebook group, watch the failures there, and you will embrace this car.

Edit: I'm not even with my car, but I'm sure the oil pump busted as I typed that^^^

Hi there,

Just curious as to how you determined the specific cut-off date of early November '17. My late November 2017 build ZLE has 6k miles, and no issues so far. But if there is a specific cut-off date relating to a change in the factory installed oil pump, I would appreciate knowing what data you have and where it came from.

Thanks in advance,

JJ

Only from what I've seen people post in that oil pump thread, plus other places online. Most of the pump failures are from build dates in July and October, but there were some outliers as far back as April and through early November, all with the same exact issue - a cracked/shattered oil pump gear housing.

What would be really informative is to know the part number of these bad pumps, but I don't think that's going to be easy info to come by. I just know that Melling has revised the part around 5 or 6 times.
