Demise may come sooner

We don't know yet how car sales will weather this virus storm but, to be sure it will take a hit. Which brings us to the Camaro. We already know GM has made it known 2023 could be the end. With unemployment going all time highs many will not be buying anything, let alone new cars.

So how will this effect the Camaro going forward? We can only speculate right now but, we should know in the next few months. Buying expensive sports cars will be the last thing on buyers minds, if they buy anything at all. Car showrooms are not even open and we don't know when they will reopen. A lot of unknowns at this time but, you have to wonder are we closer to losing our beloved Camaro?

A lot of unknowns right now but we do know the economy has taken a huge hit and may not recover for a long time and people will be unemployed and some businesses small and large will go under never to return. It’s a sad state of affairs for our country and will take some time to rebound but we are the USA!

I pick up my new one today. Dealer is having no issues moving vehicles right now. They just can’t get restocked and that will be the issue soon. My friend’s also wife works at the dmv in another area and they were closed for a week. When they went back (not open to the public yet) they had over 400 vehicles to process from the local Gm dealer.

I read where Ford and GMs sales were down something like 3% for the quarter. That's a hit for sure, but not as large as I would have expected.

There was a thread on this forum recently, but Q1 2020 camaro sales were 7,185 down from Q1 2019 12,083 This is -40,5%

GM is pushing back all 2021 model year refreshes back to the 2022MY, but this won't change the life cycles of most of their cars. If there was going to be one last version of the 6th gen Camaro, it would have started on-road testing very soon, but that would be delayed.
Also consider the effects that the 2018 restructuring and the 2019 strikes had on GM's plans. They may have cut funding for current-gen Camaro projects or ended them.

GM is shifting all of their vehicles onto just a handful of platforms by 2025, so the next Camaro's platform would already be under development. The current platform, the Alpha chassis, is shared with the now-dead Cadillac ATS and CTS, while their replacements, the CT4 and CT5, use the updated Alpha II platform. GM has missed the window to release a Camaro on the Alpha II platform, but running the current generation out until the 2024 or 2025 model year would be stupid. There's no way that the current Gen lives past the 2023 model year, so I expect there to be a couple of years without a Camaro before the next generation.

I know that this is a very sensitive topic around here, but this whole situation favors electric vehicle development, and that's where GM will continue to focus its money, even if they are losing profits. The Camaro is now a low-volume car with lots of incentives at dealerships, so it has low priority in the company's budget. If GM goes through another round of cost-cutting, it could be the nail in the coffin for gas-powered Camaros, but we aren't ready for that conversation yet.

I guess the only lemonade from lemons thought is with low sales numbers they finally develop a bigger following and collectible status down the road...

Just what I recall hearing that used cars for trade-ins will have ZERO value.

Dealerships will not even want them. All rental fleets are parked and moth-balled already.

Maybe a bad rumor, sorry if completely off. But the new-car market is completely out of whack and will never be the same. good luck.

GM, will be just fine. GM is making more money making and selling Ventilators than cars right now. Ventilators cost $25k-$50k on average. Probably making more profit on each one than they do on a car.

just Googled GM and Ford 1st quarter sales. GM is down 7%, Ford is down 12.5%. Don't know where I read the lower value, but I must have misinterpreted something. I did see where Camaro sales were down 40.5 %

They are providing the ventilators at cost. So no profit.
