Changed the Diff and M6 trans fluid today...

Well, I went by the book for the entire break-in period. Oil changed at 60, 500, and now 1550 miles on the ODO. Along with the oil I also changed the fluids in the rear differential, and tremec 6060 transmission.

Based on all of the metal particles, I would strongly suggest that you change these fluids around 1500 miles.

I wanted to see both the big pieces and the little pieces so I strained the fluids with clean white T-shirts. The rear diff. has magnets on both the drain and fill plugs. Both of them had large blobs of metal shavings on them. I took a picture of a plug after it was cleaned for comparison. The diff fluid looked like a liquid metal due to all of the small particles. New, the fluid is perfectly clear. The T-shirt had quite a bit of large shavings too. Definately NOT something you want to keep running on IMHO.

The Tremec wasn't as bad. Very few large particles. The fluid, however looked like I had a tub of RJT paint.

Pictures attached.

I've done the oil as the manual states but not the differential yet...car has not been driven though more than a few miles since early August...once I get her back the differential will be done along with the tranny and oil again.

Thanks for the pics and post...just reminds me I need to get this done!

OK, I've looked over the owners manual and for the life of me I can't find this info you guys are reffering to. Is this in the owners manual and if so what page? Or is this in the service manual?

Look at page 8-16 and 8-17 for the break in information. I am not going to be racing my car but with as much power as the LS3 has, it's impossible not to peg out the @$$ dyno every now and again. Beyond that, I was a jet mechanic for 4 years (USAF) and an auto mechanic for 5. Changing out these fluids is a very good practice for someone who demands longivity and sustained tight tolorances out of their vehicle.

Having these particles is nothing to be afraid of. They should be there on a new car. If you didn't see them then that just means you didn't look closely enough or that yours isn't finished breaking in yet. Remember, I used white T-shirts to intentionally show the particles. A new manufactured transmission and differential will always make these particles. It is a part of the natural break in process where the gears will lap together and remove the machined texture on the contact portions of the gear teeth.

I'll keep this in mind; I have about 3200 miles on my L99, and took it in for its first oil change today.

Just did my engine and trans at 1445 miles. Motor oil looked great! Also did the M6 tranny. No major surprises. I did strain the old fluid thru a paint strainer/filter(same as for a spray gun); no issues!. Filled w/8qts. Mobil 1 5W-30; trans w/Mobil ! Synthetic ATF, Dexronn III spec. I SWEAR after about 25-30 miles the tranny did free-up a little! Plan to do rear tomorrow; also w/Mobil Synthetic plus GM additive.

FYI: The fill & drain nuts are taken out with the end of a 3/8" ratchet! Torque: 24 lbs. Easy change to do, even with the Zoomer's exhaust!

Thanks again!

Why didn't you use GL-5 fluid. You wouldn't have needed the additive. The GL-5 exceedes 75-90/additive combo. The GM parts counter should of told you that. 75-90/additive is old news. Great for live axle 3-4 gen f-bods. You could use either one, but the GL-5 is newer technology.

I sent mine out for analysis. Came back clean as a whistle at 3000 miles. Sodium was detected. No metals.
