Disappointing Paint Job!

A few weeks ago I was rear-ended on my way to BBOMG with the end result being they had to replace the rear bumper cover among other things.

Fast forward to today...I decided to swing by the dealer where my car is and it is sitting outside with everything done so I stop to look at it and without even getting out of my car, me and my wife immediately notice the orange peel all over the back bumper. Upon closer inspection, I see dirt in the clear coat as well.

I stop in to talk to the body shop guy and he said the car is done a ready for clean up. I asked him about the orange peel and his reply was "...and its not a factory paint job now!" He then goes on to say that its difficult to get an orange peel free paint job outside the factory. Ummm, I have seen plenty of after market, orange peel free, paint jobs.

I have yet to talk to the body shop manager but at this point I am not going to accept the paint job as it is.

I knew I shouldnt have taken it to a dealer for the repairs!

I wouldn't accept it either, they need to wet sand and polish it out that will remove the dirt from the clear coat and the orange peel.

thats funny, the painters i deal with can lay down paint well enough with very little to no orange peel to not really need a wetsand and a buff afterwards, but they wetsand & buff either way to ensure 100% quality work and customer satisfaction. sounds like you ran across a lazy painter . i would have them strip that orange peel and reshoot it as many times as it takes to get it right. no reason to devalue that car with shoddy work.

Your car comes from the factory with orange peel but if the repainted area is worse, they need to fix it. Return to the dealer when they're busy and cause a ruckus.

She's absolutely correct. NO excuse for results like that.....tell the shop manager to hire a paint tech that actually knows how to paint.

Orange peel is when the paint job literally looks like the surface of an Orange. It has almost got a texture to it instead of being professional quality smooth. Almost like the spray gun wasn't properly calibrated, or something, and it was shooting out paint in spurts instead of evenly.

Kind of hard to explain if you aren't aware of the term "Orange Peel", I hope I helped clear it up.

Go look at your Camaro, to see it, look at an angle it looks kinda bumpy and not smooth... it has orange peel because of the paint they use now... almost all new cars do... to fully get rid of it, you need a GOOD repaint. (I want lacquer back!)
The technique is also used to cover up minor body flaws, to make production faster and save money.

Damn I was supposed to get my bumper done with Luis now I'm worried about orange peel. That settles it. I'm jut gonna push the dent in and later when I have the funds just replace the bumper entirely and have it done at the dealer.
