Exclamation Need Recommendations on how to get 500bhp

Hey everyone,

So I have already done a few mods (LSR CAI and custom tune with SCT tuner, borla s axle back exhaust) and I have not dyno tuned my car but based on the numbers given by the manufacturers it looks like I roughly have added 42bhp to my car. I am looking to get to 500bhp but I do not want to spend a ton of money (ie supercharger, twin turbo etc).

Right now I am roughly at 470bhp, but I am looking to get an extra 30ish bhp to bring me to 500 at the crank~430hp at the wheels.

Any suggestions on how to do this with bolt on mods? or do I have to go to LT headers/cam shaft or something of the likes. I was hoping to avoid any major additions but I guess that my not be feasible.

Any and all suggestions are welcomed/appreciated.

hi flow cats should be good enough to get you there, or at least 495 bhp. The TB doesn't seem to get any hp gains, but the throttle response is improved slightly. If you want to be sure you're over 500, get longtube headers.

You will need to do the exhaust work to get to 500 horsepower. Take a look at Kooks products. We have been very pleased with the gains. I will PM you some information

Do you really think you got 42hp from your CAI and tune? That would be the most i've EVER heard of. The catback is considered a sound mod only.

The 42 he is talking about is flywheel power gains given by the manufacturers. That isn't too hard to believe. Tunes, if done properly, can add anywhere from 15 to 30 depending on how the car comes out of the factory (i.e. Monday car vs Friday car).

As for 450 WHEEL horsepower, you will probably have to go with a set of LT headers. Cat backs do add a littel bit of power but don't really even show much on the seat of the pants dynos on this forum. Honestly though, find a good tuner becuase the minute you add the LTs, you will have to get tuned. Moving the HEGO's and changing exhaust pulses and temperatures play havoc on fuel trims.

Long tubes and exhaust were by far the best thing I've done on this car (cam isn't in for a couple weeks) so I would highly recommend long tubes.

So, just to clarify, it sounds like I would only have to do LT headers? I do not think I would do the full cat-back exhaust as I do not see much power gains from that (sure the pipes would be a bit straighter but I believe it is the same diameter as the stock pipes...any thoughts)

cai, full exhaust(lt's and catback), you can also add an underdrive pulley and ported throttle body, and a good dyno tune, might also want to look at a ported manifold

426hp to 500hp is 74hp. That's beyond what most guys are making with basic bolt on mods.

Most LS3s go from around 370 -375 rwhp to 410-415 rwhp with intake, long tube headers, high flow cats, and a tune. Thats a 40hp gain (on average) with those mods (including long tube headers and high flow cats).

The L99s go from around 320 - 330 rwhp to 360-370 rwhp with the same setup.

So don't take the manufacturers claims for HP.

I agree with you there. I have intake, Kooks LTs and cats, Vmaxx TB, Borla S cat back and a tune. Ran it on the dyno today and got 405 rwhp. Granted it was 99 F out and very humid so maybe under better conditions might pick up a few more hp but thats it. I saw some one post that their CAI and tune gave them 40hp! Come on now people! Lets get real with some of these claims!

Yea in the real world you could expect 415 rwhp with LT's, catted mids, a good cai, and a tune. The Vmax ported throttle body won't hurt but don't expect more than a couple hp. To get more than 415 the next step would be a cam, then your talking 450+ rwhp! Ted Jannetty sells his 415 package which is LT's, CAI, and tune and it IS real world what to expect. Manufacturers claims are ALWAYS a little high!

Why are you aiming for a HP goal at the crank? Why not pick a number that you can easily measure with a dyno? You're assuming that your car has exactly 426 hp at the crank. It could have more or less. Sounds like you just want to be able to say your car puts out 500hp.
