No love for the 2016 Miata?

I've been drooling over one lately and may consider getting it to supplement the '90 I already have instead of upgrading to the 6th gen Camaro.

If you want to hear about real weight loss, then the Miata is it! The 2016 comes in at only 4 pounds heavier than the 2nd generation version. That's with all the included safety junk! It weighs about 2400 lbs!

The Miata comes with a 2.0L Skyactiv engine pushing 155hp@6000rpm and 148lb-ft@4600rpm. Perfect 50/50 balance as usual and with the Club edition you can opt for the Brembo/BBS package which includes Brembo brakes and forged 17" wheels along with an aero kit.

Nothing personal, I always thought of them as being a chick's car.

I say "go for it." My wife and I picked up a 2013 hard top convertible MX-5 and we love it. It makes a nice addition to the car family here.

The new MX-5 is beautiful! Go for it. Pay no attention to the ignorant stereotypes. The Miata has so much racing heritage plus it's clearly the class SCCA leader for many many years now.... it's a fine sports car on & off the track. Spec Miata also rules the road courses in terms of racing enthusiasts and outright numbers. The newest gen takes balance, perfect weight distribution, and handling to another level... although even the older chassis can still perform well. Can't go wrong with that recipe. It's not always about brute power.

Here's a friend and I on the track having some fun.... of course he lets me pass by.

I am with you on the new one like the old ones a lot but the 2016 I am smitten with. It looks more aggressive reminds me of a 2/3 - 3/4 scale Jaguar F-Type. I know at some point I will have to own one. They are so highly regarded for their balance and handling I fell like if I never drive one I will have missed out on a special motoring experience. Granted that can be said about a lot of cars but of those how many are this affordable. Also once in my life I want to go to Vegas and try that exotic car experience at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, spend 1500-3000$ for a whole day and drive a handful of exotic cars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes AMG, Aston Martin,...)

Don't worry about all the short pecker comments and go for it. I like the redesign. I often thought it would be a fun car to own.

How quick are these? Even at 2400 pounds, 155 isn't a ton of HP. I have a hard time imaging it being 'competitive'. Sure, great handling. But for around town I'll always take HP over track level handling. Just seems like a niche car/gimmick. Feel the same about the Minis, and the BRZ (as well as the Veloster) are jokes too.

You would think, stoopid... I never paid them much mind either until I drove one. What a seriously fun ride. I mean, you can have a stable full of HP cars, but nothing is wrong with some diversity also. The handling and ride is fun and not everything has to have massive HP to be fun to drive. Me, in particular, I like the hard top convertible feature where a press of a button turns the car from a solid hard top car into a REAL "transformer" transformed top down. The Miata crowd (clubs, groups, meets, cruises, etc.) has been at it a lot longer and harder than the Camaro crowd, in fact. When I want the pure HP, though, I get into one of the Vette's.

I love light weight sports cars. People who talk trash about them just don't get it most likely because they have never driven one. If the Miata or FRS/BRZ would produce a higher performance model with a turbo making something in the 250hp range I would be all over it.

Roughly my conclusion after the RX8 I owned. No torque. Rotary power was high in the band. But the handling, oh the handling. The car was on rails but I typically didn't have the opportunity to enjoy that aspect around town.

So I figured, why not the hi-po V8 i've always wanted, and i'll upgrade the handling......

the desire for the vehicle totally depends on what you do with your car. if you autocross your car or love small winding roads a Miata or similar would be a car youd want. if you want to drag race then this just isn't.

Always been a fan of the looks, just not enough HP for me. If they had a Turbo version making 250-280 HP I'd be all over one.
