Hoosier DR2 drag radial VS MT et street R
During my last post about 1/8 and 1/4 mile new record, a few guys asked me to let everyone know how the new Hoosier DR2 compared to the ET street R. Well I have your comparison, but first I have to say that the 1/8 mile record that I reset last month has been trumped terribly by Hunter and I don't believe it will be touched by anyone other than him anytime soon.
Before switching to the CCW 16s currently on my car, I ran the race star 17s with MT et street R's. I had never been as happy with any tire on my car as I was with the ET street R's. I had been a 1.481 60ft and in good weather could consistently cut under 1.50. I bracket raced the car at State Capitol raceway and knew what the car was going to do every pass. At the end of last year I had some CCW wheels basically fall in my lap. It's hard to find a good drag tire for 16 inch wheels so originally I went with the M&H racemasters. I made 2 outings with them at the track and could not hook up for the life of me. Enter the Hoosier DR2 drag radial. At first I was skeptical and didn't want to get something that almost looks like a slick. I drive my car to the track and didn't want to have any worries, but my main goal was to hook. I sprung for the Hoosiers and had them mounted the day they came in. Itching to get to the track I drove them on the street a few times, and they honestly handle like every other drag radial. I have to drive on the interstate to get to the track, and at 75 they were fine. At the track, the tires performed just like I thought they would. With a best of 1.461 60ft cutting 2 hundredths off of what I cut on the MT et street R's. Every pass on these tires were as consistent as the street R's. After the first outing, the tires remained a little sticker on the street, and I can say streetwise that I haven't had anything that hooked up like them to this day. In a full comparison, I would say either of these tires would be a great application for bolt on and other SBE cars. My car is set up to leave hard and both of these tires got the job done. I rarely spun either tire launching at the track and never got anything unexpected from them. I hope this comparison will help you guys make your tire decisions, but honestly either way, you can't go wrong! |

I run Hoosier DR2 also... Hooks very good, and I have the small tire so It's add to my gear ratio. With a stock clutch and a 315/30/18 I'm mid 1.50's leaving somewhat soft trying not to break much. Most say that a little sidewall won't work but it works for me.

Great reviews Dustin and Billy.
I would agree about the M&H tires, I think they are not as good. I'l be running M/T Pro Bracket Radials this season but next set of tire I could try the Hoosiers if they have a 275/60/15.

My experience with M & H Racemasters has been fine with proper air pressure, I have managed with only 17" wheels to cut a 1.376 60ft. but I now have 15" Racemasters, hopefully I have similar results on 15's. I have also seen a Jeep Cherokee SRT with twin turbos running 8.91 with same 17" inch Racemasters and lifting the front end so high it scraped the rear bumper and tore rear bumper up. The day I meet him I was not hooking and I talked to him and he had me change to the same pressure he was running and I was then hooking again.

Awesome guys! Thank you Dustin for starting this...
We run ET Street R as well....Haven't had a need to try anything else to be honest....But we will be going to 15's soon, I guess we'll have some decisions to make then. We'll take all the advice we can get so any reviews on those John would be great... And Hunter said thanks for the shout out Dustin!

Thanks for the review. Which tire would you say you had to do a longer burnout to make them stick real good?

I definitely won't knock the M&H's, I had good luck on them when I was running 18s. Never had an issue and ran them until their dying days. They just didn't work for me on the 16 inch setup. I tried air pressures from 14-22 and no luck at any pressure. Definitely didn't WANT to buy new tires after I had just bought new tires, but you can't bracket race competitively if you don't hook up! BTW I have some 16 inch racemasters if they would work for anyone that wants them. 2 outings on them. Real cheap to a C5 member. Lol PM me. |

For both of these all I would do is basically "haze" them. A short burnout usually worked fine. Maybe other will chime in also on what worked for them.

Dustin did you run MH 325/18s? Those are pretty wide. What size did you run in 16's?
In their defense the MH I tried were 275/50/17. About the same size as a stock Pirelli. But I could not ever leave on full power on them.

What works for me is a 2nd gear burnout for about 5 seconds does the trick.

Might sound stupid but is it better to burnout hard from the beginning or start spinning the tires slowly? I've seen this at the track before, wondering if there is any difference. I would think heat is heat right?

I ran the 275/55 on the 16 and I ran the 325/40 on the 18s. I still have no complaints about the 325/40/18 M&H. They did a very good job for me.
