Richmond 4.10's Update

I noticed on a new/recent set of Richmond 4.10's a friend bought for his Camaro they included a special setup instruction sheet. They recommend a "deep" tooth pattern (i.e., shallower pinion depth) to improve durability.

After helping him setup his I pulled mine and reset them, this also solve a very slight whine I was hearing at 45 MPH. They're perfectly quiet now.

Anyway, for those of you with Richmond 4.10's you may want to contact them for a copy of that setup sheet and have your gears checked/reconfigured.

I just got my replacement 4.10 set from richmond, and my set also says "This gear set has been developed with a special tooth contact pattern to help this set take more load"....

This rubs me the wrong way.....

People have sent their broken 4.10 ring and pinion in to richmond for warranty purposes, and from those broken gear sets, they have figured that "it needs to be set with a special pattern"

It's nice to know that Richmond used it's customers as part of their R & D for their gears. Sure they replaced my gears, but what about the hidden costs?

They didn't replace the installation kit, that I'm going to have to buy again.

They didn't reimburse any installation fees. seeing how I have to get the gears installed TWICE because of richmond

They didn't want to reimburse any of the parts that broke as a result from their improper installation instructions (if this new pattern even works)

Fortunately for me, my camaro is not my daily driver, but if it was, I highly doubt they would reimburse any sort of rental car fee, as it's because of their defective product/improper installation instructions that my ring and pinion broke in the first place.

In case anyone is wondering, I have the back of one finger towards South Carolina right now.

so how much did you change the pinion depth to get this deeper pattern? what was your factory pinion shim and what did you end up with?

can you scan those new instructions and post them up for everyone. do they give a pic of their approved deeper pattern.

the instructions come with tw pictures of their "ideal" pattern.... one of the coast side and one of the load side

I will scan it tomorrow at work.... the only thing I could do with it right now, is take a picture of it with my phone, and that won't do much of anything.

PLEASE

is it possible that these instructions would only apply to the newer gear sets?

and I'm thinking no. My first set of 4.10's, all the ring gear teeth broke on the outside of the ring gear (and I'm assuming that everyone else's gears broke in the same fashion) , so I'm assuming Richmond saw this problem, and figured with with a deeper tooth pattern, that it won't put such a load on the outside of the ring gear.

The new set of 4.10's that I recieved look just like the first set I got

yyyeeeaaaahhhhh...... ummmmm i'm still kinda skeptical. Right now I dont know if I want to risk running them again, and just sell them.

I'm going to be calling them later today, and ask them what kind of warranty will this new "pattern" hold. If they tell me if the gears break again, then I have to go through all of this again, you will be seeing a set of richmond 4.10 gears for sale in the classifieds section...... I'll just cut my losses, run stock gears :(, and pray that I win the lottery, so I can afford to do a 9" conversion

Sorry for the delayed response. My pinion was marked for a depth of 2.742" an I ended up at 2.7405". The back lash setting was recommended to be 0.008". I actually took a chance and set it a bit tighter at slightly over 0.007". I have 130 miles on them, so far so good.
