1LE Suede shift knob cleaning

Hi all, I joined the forum to share something I learned about the suede leather shift knob on the 1LE. Mine was super dirty and gummed up. After trying quite a few cleaners and brushes with no success I did some internet searches and found one person recommending Dawn dishwashing liquid. I was going to buy a new shifter anyways so I popped it off and tried it. My shifter looks brand new now. Before you buy expensive suede cleaners or a new shift knob, try dawn and water. Work it into a lather and then rinse.

Will try this, only used water and a microfibre cloth before.

Yep! Oils from your hand make the suede look rough and matted down. Anything that will remove the oils out of it will make it look brand new.

I keep a suede brush in my glovebox, and actually do brush out my shifter and wheel every week or 2, and I use Adam's upholstery cleaner when it gets beyond brushing.

Can you share a little more about the process? Is it a light scrub with a brush, or do you remove everything and soak it in soapy water?

This is what I use, works great. Hit the wheel and shifter once a week or so. Keep it in the door pocket and use it while waiting at stop lights, drive thru's, or to pick someone up.

Brush out as much dust as you can, then just spray cleaner on a microfiber, and wipe it down if it's not too matted.

If your shifter has some bad spots on it, looks really shiny and flat, I would remove it and run under water and use soap directly. Then hang to let it naturally dry.

I use ‘Sonax Alcantara cleaner’, along with a interior detail brush.

I use the brush to knock any dust or grime from the shifter and steering wheel, then apply the Somax cleaner directly to the surface that I’m cleaning.

Otherwise, just follow the directions on the back of the cleaning product you’re using, and you’ll be good to go!

Right into the gutter this thread went. C5 never disappoints.

I've done this for a few years now on the suede, just a few drops of dawn and hot water followed by a clean wet microfiber behind it then a dry one

I was debating on removing the shift knob and cleaning it in the sink with dawn and water. Is soaking it a bad idea?
