Finally Installed CF5s - Got a "Clunk" Noise
Yesterday, I finally got my tires mounted on my Forgestar CF5s. Today, I installed the wheels with the supplied hubcentric rings. Torqued the lug nuts to 100lbs. Took the car for some slow figure 8 turns in a big parking lot outside of my warehouse. When I made a left turn, there was a "clunk, clunk, clunk" coming from the rear. I took the car back into the warehouse to see if anything was rubbing in the rear. Checked the lugs on the rear wheels and 3 of the 5 lug nuts on the left rear wheel needed to be tightened again. Took the car back out for figure 8s. Same thing - "clunk, cluck, clunk" on left turns and minor, occasional "clunks" when driving straight. Took the car back into the warehouse and tried to remove the left rear wheel to make sure the hub ring was ok. The wheel is stuck on.... I can't get it off! I hit the tire a few times with a rubber mallet hoping to loosen it up, but no luck. (Didn't try to remove the rear right wheel). I'd like to try and pull off the rear wheels to check them out and see if the hug ring is ok. Any thoughts on getting them off and what the noise may be? If I can't figure it out - I'll take it to the installer who mounted tires on the wheels on Monday.
Also - the stock Camaro wheels are torqued to 100lbs. Is this ok for the Forgestar wheels or is there a recommended setting for them? |

100 ft lbs is where you should be....far as the clunk goes, I have no idea.. My car does it to when I make left turns, but I have the dss 9' and have read that's normal for me.. Might be something else wrong.. I'd put the stock tires and rims back on and see if it still does it... I seriously doubt its your new wheels. Have to trial and error first... sound to me its something in the rear more so than the tires...

Yep...trying the stock wheels again was a thought, but I can't get the new left rear wheel off. It's stuck on the hub.

Well, you have no choice other than to try to get it off... just jack the car up and try kicking the tire... if it doesnt break loose... get under the car and kick it from the back side.. either way, you have to get it off...

Did you check the ebrake cable to see if it is rubbing in the rear wheels? Common problem with 11" rears and 315 tires. You may need to zip tie the cable away from the wheels.

It's probably not the cause, but isnt the recommended lug torque 140lbs?

I would think maybe the one ring on the stuck wheel is wrong size and when initially tightened the wheel may not have been fully seated to the front of the rotor and when you drove it it worked it loose making the clunk then you retightened it basically pressing it onto the hub and that's why it won't come off just a thought

You trouble has made me think twice about buying a wheel that needs hubcentric rings to fit properly. Good luck on getting it resolved. Hopefully it doesn't mess the wheel up.

OEM torque is 100lbs. There have been lots of discussions on this. I just didn't know if it changed from wheel to wheel based on wheel metal type, etc..... I was just told from place I bought the wheels from to use OEM torque setting ans well.
Figured out the "clunk, clunk, clunk"..... one of the inside weights on the rear wheel is hitting the brake line. The is only about a 3/8" (or a little more) gap between the inside of the wheel and the brake line. But when I turn to one side and the car leans to that side, the weight hits the brake line..... "clunk, clunk, clunk". Gonna got to the installer and have him move that weight a little bit. Oh...getting a wheel stuck on a hub off? Jack up car and remove the lug nuts leaving one lug nut on, but loosely. Spray the hub area with some lubricate (WD40, PB Blaster...). Wait 5-10 minutes. Lay behind and under the car and hold a board against the tire. I used a 1x4 about 2 feet long. The board with protect the tire and wheel and keep the hammer or hand sledge from bouncing off the tire. Whack that board hard until the wheel loosens. Wheel and hub ring are fine.......inspected after removal. Just a tight fit. Wheels stuck on hubs (after doing a little internet research) is fairly common. It's 140 not 100
Quote from said thread "GM vehicles that have the torque spec of 100 ftlbs / 140 N.m are cars that use the SMALLER 12mm x1.50 stud. This includes the Corvette The 2010-11 Camaro is the only GM car that uses the 14mm x 1.50 stud. All other GM cars use the smaller 12mm x 1.5 stud." http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33139
