Around 100k miles, Engine going out?

So I posted a couple weeks ago about having the notification on my dash saying "Turn Off Engine - Low Oil Pressure!"

I thought it was the oil pump so I took it to the shop to get it replaced. I found out today it might be some bearings Possibly camshaft bearings and others. (Idk much about engines so I might be using the wrong terms).

The shop wouldnt give me a estimate on how much it would cost though and said it would be better in person. Except I live about 45 minutes from the mechanic and have no mode of transportation.

Does anyone know how much this would cost to get my Camaro running again?

Thank you. -Phil

There isn't any reason they can't give you a price remotely. If they refuse to I would take it to someone easier to work with.

If you were in the US you could by short block for about $4,000. Don't know about in Germany.

Do you think that would be necessary or would I be able to replace the oil pump and bearings for much cheaper than replacing the engine?

Well I know to replace my camshaft/valvetrain alone was about $1500 in labor. You're looking to be around $1200 prob to access the camshaft. I've heard as high as $2000, depending where you go. They'll have to pull the engine to access the pump which I was quoted $800ish to replace an oil pan gasket, which is where the pump obviously is. I'd say you're looking somewhere around $1500-$2000 is my guess for your generic mechanic to have everything done. If you go to a name brand place like chevy or somewhere well known you could be looking at 3k-4k.

Jeez. Well, that's still a bit cheaper than replacing the whole engine. Thanks for the insight. I hit just over 100k miles on my SS and I reckon it's due to the higher speeds on the autobahn. For the past year and a half my Camaro has been in Germany.

We'll see how much this is going to cost me.

I don't think it's likely necessary but I threw it out as a max value.

There really needs to be some idea of what failed first. Did the oil pump go first and then other damaged followed due to low oil pressure? Did you have a cam failure that caused the original low oil pressure? Someone with more experience than I have needs to chime in.

I also would have to say that at 100k miles I would likely just rebuild/replace mine if I had to pull the motor instead of just trying to fix what is broke.

IMHO ,get a GM performance crate engine ,and sell your core to someone who wants to rebuild you old engine. Start fresh with a new improved higher horsepower engine with a warrantee .

Dropping the oil pan isn’t necessary to change the oil pump, unless you need to replace the pick up tube. The oil pump is bolted to the front of the block And is turned by the crank snout. Just need to remove front cover.

They do also sell a bolt in kit for the crossmember I believe if you need to drop the oil pan. Though pulling the engine isn't very hard. I would likely find a used engine and swap it in if you are stock and plan to keep it that way. Depending on the shop and the extent of damage a rebuild can far exceed a drop in used engine. I only ever really recommend a rebuild if you can do it yourself or have an amazing and cheap rebuilder (or friend)

I just 110k miles and had a low oil pressure check engine. Turned out to be just the oil pressure sensor.
