What NASCAR should be

I would love to see a division running true "stock" cars like this. Something like this might bring fans back to Cup racing.

It would never work. You are assuming the cars are even which they are not. One brand would have a clear aerodynamic advantage and be faster or handle better. So either the same brand would win all the time and/or everyone would switch to that same brand and you would have only one brand in the entire series.

Theres always a competitive edge for one brand over another. If not NASCAR wouldn't constantly be changing body templates EVERY year. Competitiveness isn't the reason NASCAR crowds are down, Its the tickets prices and "packaging" that have people not buying. I went to both Daytona Races every year for the last 15 years but then they started making you buy seats for both the truck and Nationwide serious races but yet someone could show up the day of the race and purchase tickets in the same area...
Not good for repeat / loyal customers

I guess so but as recently as 25 yrs ago, bodies were "stock". That formula worked back in the day.

That's it. NASCAR once was true stock cars and yes different companies would dominate for a few years.

Well, then I guess the different car makers would just have to put in the effort to make their cars more competative each year. The consumers would then benefit thanks to the constant improvements!

It's a WIN-WIN for everyone! (Except if you hate internal combustion engines)

A little off topic, but I'm sure most of you will agree some of the late 80's and early '90s NASCARs were the best looking ones ever.

I understand why they all look the same now, but I think it detracts from the experience.

The current Nationwide series has Mustang and Challenger bodies, while Chevy still uses the Impala. However, the Camaro body will be used in 2013:

Unfortunately, it appears Dodge is dropping out of all NASCAR series (trucks, Nationwide, and Sprint Cup) in 2013.

The closest thing to Mustangs, Camaros, and Challengers racing together is the Grand Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge (GS class):

IMO it didn't work. Teams back then would win races by several laps! That's not exciting.

The chase should go away. Im tired of all the hype with the top 12 drivers the last 10 races. A champion is the one who is most consistent thru the whole season. Not the last 10 races. It's not fair to someone who might be 13th,14th or more in points when there is 10 races to go. In the old points system one of those drivers could end up in the top 10 by the end of the season. And vice versa.

Agreed. I get that they wanted the last few races more important, since in the past you could have the championship locked away with 2 or 3 races to go. But if anything, they've made the end of the season less important.

The focus is now solely on the top drivers winning the championship. Before the chase, there was a lot more focus on your driver doing well that weekend and whether he moved up in points -whether he was 5th or 25th. Now, Nascar has decreed that only a handful are important. Everybody else is essentially just field filler. And once a driver is out of contention for the championship people these days seem to lose interest altogether.

They should just make races with completely stock cars, have limited classes though, similar to like Forza or Gran Turismo would work. I would watch that all day, every day.

I guess I'm one of the few that likes the Chase format. I didn't start watching NASCAR until after the Chase format was implemented. I like the idea of a playoff type of system. Admittedly it sucks for a team who has one bad race in the Chase because it effectively knocks them out of contention. But that's no different than football.

much prefer watching the continental tire sports car series or austrailian v8 supercars, nascar to me seems like wrestling as its mostly just for show. I also can't stand to listen to the drivers and commentators speak it's like nails on a chalkboard.
