How clean for new gasket?
I’m replacing the water pump and other parts. This is how clean I’ve gotten the surface so far. How clean does it need to be before applying a new gasket? Does all of that black residual need to come off?
If it does, any tips or tricks? Thanks

I cleaned mine pretty well. Not sure its 100% needed, but i did it. I used a razor blade and a rag with solvent. Go slow and be careful. Most of it will come off.

I use a razor blade as well. very lightly, just enough to get the residue off and make sure it doesn't dig into the block/mounting surface. As gunchamp said, slow and careful.

You need a flat surface to seal against. I would clean it up a bit more with a razor as mentioned. Don't want to have to take it apart again because of a leak.

Plastic razor made specificially for this purpose. Get it clean and not damage the surface. All auto parts stores have them for a couple bucks.

Thank you everyone for your input. I have plastic blades I can use. Not sure why I didn’t think of using them sooner.
Thanks!
