The OP is not complaining about the AMF. He's complaining about the highway MPG.
!6-17 is very low for highway driving. When my L99 SS was new I could get about 21
-22 max on the highway. Now with 54,000 miles I get a steady 23-24 if driving easy.
Also my stock SS has the Solo J/pipe muffler delete and I can never hear the AFM kick
in and out, and there's no drone at any RPM. Some guys just like to bad mouth the
Auto L99 IMO.

Yeah like a lot of us that own one..... The AFM is awful on these cars and it should have never been crippled with it. I'm glad you like it on yours but for me either it had to go or the car did.
Tuning solved it but of course took my warranty out early on which I was okay with so I went for it....

You can and by all means should retain VVT. It has a broader power band and has a lot of potential in today's tuning industry, provided the tuner knows what he's doing with VVT.

The way to disable it:

1. Delete DOD and AFM by upgrading your valvetrain with the necessary parts.

2. Get a tune and have AFM deactivated.

Or...without requiring modification:

3. Pull the shifter all the way back to M. You are now in Sport Mode. Next, hit the left paddle shifter, wait 2 seconds, hit the right paddle shifter, wait 2 seconds, and then hit the left paddle one more time. Left, right, left. Don't do it too fast or it won't work.

AFM will now be deactivated until you move your shifter to Reverse, Neutral, Drive, or Park. This is more like a quick band-aid rather than a solution. My advice is to cam it and have DOD and AFM gone altogether.
I find it's way simpler than that. Put the shifter in M. You are now in Sport mode.

Start driving. Now do ONE downshift and you have disabled AFM as long as you continue shifting manually.

To keep the afm disabled you will have to stay in manual mode using the tapshift.

Definitely the downshift is what does the trick. I was going nuta before i ended up figuring it out on my own. It would try and go into AFM, and I'd tap the gas to keep it in 8 cylinder mode. Wow that was so annoying!

Uh? Its still active in manual mode and while using the tapshift .Its the downshift using the tapshift that disengages it.

Like most, I wish AFM would simply disengage when shifting into M. How simple is that!

I have it on my L99 and I ****ing hate it . you will hear the farting noise on aftermarket exhaust. Almost sounds like a helicopter is hovering right by you. Also what really pisses me off is when I'm light on the throttle it kicks in and there's a delay kinda like the car going limp until you punch it....

Try to imagine it when running open headers. Yeah..reeeeally bad. The best part is that when I bought the car, I had no idea about this feature. All I knew was that I finally got my American V8 muscle car, then when I got it home, I looked that sound up and learned the truth: 4 banger Camaro/AFM. My face must've been priceless. I remember yelling Noooooo
