Well the unthinkable happened to me. After owning my 2000 SS for 14 years, I opened the door one morning and the wind got a hold of it and slammed it into the adjacent stone wall. First time my car has suffered any damage on my watch.

We are talking the wind fully extended the door into the wall. 5th Gens don't have the 4th Gen door woes. Damn the long ass doors on 4th Gens. It cracked the very end lip of the door and I probably cause more damage having to pull it off the wall than the initial impact. The damage is in the ONE place you don't want it to happen, the edge lip of the door. I'm trying to figure out what's the best way to repair FRP (fiberglass reinforced plastic). This was only the 3rd time I had her out this year.

I get it, crap happens. But this just chaps me.

Here's a before:

And after:

^Ouch I feel your pain. Your first course of action is in getting a very good auto body guy/gal. If it were me I would see if you can get a new door skin, but you may even be able to graft in a part of the skin where the damage is located. Dunno since I'm not a body or collision expert, but I've been thru a few mishaps on other cars.

You should not fear, as almost anything is fixable. You want the damage to be fixed properly, and the paint to be perfectly blended. With the repair done right, the car will seem as good as new.

Edit: Check your door hinges while the car is being repaired. You may as well replace those if the wind gust caused damage to the hinges.

Just seems like everyone has completely lost interest in the 4th gen,and the ls1..I went digging around the old websites ,LS1.com etc and there’s like 2 ppl on the older forums which you’d think would of stuck around ,but I guess not..
I went looking to see what was for sale, maybe find a deal on something cool and there was 2 cars listed for sale!lol...
Today it seems like it’s all the used car d3alers who have them now, after all being traded in..
Although there was a lot of stock cars ,even low mileage like under 2k at decent prices for some, others they were asking nut ball pricing in the 35k range,to 38k, which is just way over priced considering I can buy a 5th Zl1 for 35k with really low mileage..like under 5-10k on the clock..
I just like to find a mint 4th gen with a LSX454 conversion done right, and finished without any issues..

Little update here. Car has just been in the garage with a cover over it. Didn't bother to reregister the car, and changed the insurance to "Storage". Car hasn't left the garage in about 4 months.

Nothing new going on. May swap the 10 spokes back on and try and sell the ZR1 wheels

good find and great color very nice! i had a lt1 4th gen f body i searched hard for a non t-top t56 car this is what i came up with.
i sold it around 3 years ago personally i didn't like the LS car front ends the motors proved to be better than the lt1 in alot of ways.
the pics were on a local car show day.
i loved that the 4th gens are almost 1000 pounds lighter than the 5th and the only metal body panels on my car were the rear quarters.

Beautiful Firehawk. I have a soft spot for 93-97 cars as well. Love the front end myself.

Well, I'm back, I've decided I'm going to sell my 4th gen and go back to a 5th gen ZL1. A vicious cycle I know. Wife misses and I admit I miss it at well. I think I'm going to look for a ZL1 that has a decent amount of miles vs 5k miles so I don't feel bad about modding.

How about just an SS that you could mod without any regrets at all?

If its possible keep the SOM. I hate getting rid of mint cars (but keeping them has its own set of issues). At the same time you want a good zl1 so that there are no regrets later. Good luck.

I would kind of "T" of this guys thoughts. I was considering between a 14/15 ZL1 and a Z28 both of which are normally in the mid to high $30's.

I was not a huge fan of the ZL1/early gen front bumpers and the Z28 was just a little to "track" focused for me (i.e. CC Brakes are insanely expensive for the street use).

I ended up finding the 1LE as a good alternative. I personally think the styling mark of the 14/15 1LE is the best of the (3) with the matte hood although I do have aftermarket Z28 spoiler and grille.

That being said why I throw this out there is you can still get some of the same perks but at a huge discount. Recaros, TR6060, 3.91 gears, ZL1 Toe Links, Axles, etc..

The kicker here is that then gives you a huge buffer in price to build what you want.

I paid $20k for my 2015 1SS/1LE with 15k miles on it. It was a Recaro car and already had cam/headers/cai. That gives me another $15-18k to reach the price point I would have paid for a stock ZL1 or Z28.

I plan on swapping for a Blower Cam and installing a TVS2300 and will be out the door for under $30k. The car will be very comparable to a ZL1, still have similar rarity as 1LE had low production numbers, and the only thing I am missing is forged internals of which the LS3 is highly capable of handling what I am looking at.

This being said I am sure you know all this as if I remember correctly your friend had pretty much the exact car I am looking to build lol.
