Actually motor is a general term that can refer to engines as well. The defining characteristic of a motor is that it imparts motion.

Not really. Motor is appropriate for internal combustion engines as well.

Look up GM, FoMoCo, BMW, etc.

Think of it this way the rim of anything is the outter edge. Ever heard of a rim of a glass or the rim of a canyon? You don't call a glass a rim or a canyon a rim because the rim is just a part of the total object.
