New ZL1 under carriage covered in salt...

I was excited that my ZL1 built and delivered mid December. Picked up from dealer a week ago and drove straight home.

finally get to check out the car and found under carriage of car completely covered in salt... there are noticeable amount of rust through out exhaust. Especially the coupling part... and all the aluminum bar/support/ panel are corroded.

Should I address this issue to dealer or gm customer service? The car is literally 2 weeks old... kinda disappointed. I guess I will be looking for good car wash that will wash underneath of the car.

Most car washes do the undercarriage spray. But I still would notify the dealer

That would have been a deal breaker for me. I would get a compound like KROWN rust proofing put on it to keep it from getting any worse.

Hope that helps.

I used to be so worried about that type of stuff to the point, it wore me out worrying all the time. There are some guys here that drive these cars years round, even in snow. These cars were made for this climate. Heck my last GEN5 car was a fleet car for GM...driven in detroit for part of a winter. The car looked brand new underneath for the most part, and the price was right. I blasted it off underneath with a power sprayer and never looked back.
My advice is to get the salt off as soon as you can with a good under body wash. And enjoy the car.

Really sorry to hear that. I know exactly how you feel. I'm not sure what GM has going on, but this corrosion is not normal. Simply being exposed to the elements for a few weeks while in transit shouldn't cause that type of corrosion.

The ZL1 1LE in the link that was posted was going to be mine. It was in really bad condition too, so I left it at the dealer.

I bought a new 2014 GMC Sierra in June of '14. It's my daily driver, and it's exposed to salt throughout the winters here in WV. It has almost 40k miles, and you could count on one hand how many times I've washed it. It's still in better shape underneath than that ZL1 1LE was with 3 miles.

You are doing the right thing by creating a case with GM. This needs fixed, and there's no chance of it being fixed if people accept these cars as-is.

I won't accept mine if it comes in like that. Hopefully it won't but only time will tell

I appreciate all the replies. At this time, I took some pictures of under carriage of the car and went ahead got a bucket of warm water mix with simple green and wiped what I can get to under the car. It looks much better. The car still need to run through one of those touch less car wash with under carriage spray.

Have any of you used this before? I don’t live in a snowy area but it works great and I can tell it works by not turning my rotors rusty after a wash

Never use that before. Might check it out.

I ordered some salt away spray from amazon. Will try that first.

Need to remove salt? Just use plain water.

The best thing for removing salt is plain clean water. But if you want to spend more money and spray something to make you feel better, go for it.

Salt Away contains (from their MSDS): 70-90% Distilled water, which removes salt. Plus pixie dust to make you feel good: 5-10% surfactant, 5-10% corrosion inhibitor, 5-10% non-hazardous coupling agent, none of which remove salt. MSDS Ref.

One of AMMO's claims: "neutralizes" salt. False. Salt is already neutralized by definition (NA neutralizes CL one to one). The water in it will dissolve salt deposits, just like the water from your tap.

For removing aluminum oxide corrosion there are chemicals out there containing phosphoric and hydrofluoric acids. Alumabright cleaner looks promising, but it's probably really bad for anything anodized and everything else on your car, but most I found require some mechanical agitation. Don't get it on your bare skin or you'll regret it. MSDS REF
