Consumer Reports did an oil test a few years ago, running each popular brand in a new taxi engine. They changed the oil and filter every 3,000 miles on some and every 6,000 miles on others for about, if I remember correctly, 60-70k miles. They then tore the engines down, mic'ed parts and found no significant wear difference between any of the SAE approved oils tested. I'm not sure if synthetics were part of the test or not. They also advised not going over 6,000 miles between changes because of contamination.

there's the kicker.

6000 miles on a new engine with any oil shouldnt show much of anything outside of normal breakin wear. unless they didnt fill it up enough or too much.

But they did those oil changes every 3,000 or 6,000 miles for 60,000 to 70,000 miles and then tore the engines down, and found no wear difference between the two frequencies of oil change or any of the popular oils. In fact it may very well have been 100,000 miles, I'm not sure. Their conclusion was simply that one name brand oil is as good as any other today, none break down as oils used to.

5000 is easier for my simple brain math than 6000.

5,000,
10,000,
15,000,
20,000,
25,000, etc

is easier to remember than

6,000,
12,000,
18,000,
24,000,
30,000, etc.

Just personal preference.

since I do all the maintenance in my and my fiance's vehicles, ive started puttin a piece of tape on her windshield and writing the mileage for the next oil change. that way when I drive her car, I know exactly when it needs to be changed
