Sounds Like a Shroud But Dealer Says Transmission is Shot
I have a 2011 Camaro LT v6 with manual transmission. When pulling from a stop and running through 1st and 2nd gears, I get this shrowd-like rattling at the top of the power band but only after engaging the clutch to upshift. I some times hear the sound when running at constant throttle in fist and second gear. I can't really hear it in the other gears but I think I can feel it in 3rd as well. I believe it could be the clutch throw out bearing but the dealer said the transmission is shot and gave me a jar sample of my oil which he says smells burnt but I don't think its abnormal. I didn't let him replace the transmission at $4000 because the car is running fine: no clutch slip, no power fades, shifts great, pulls strong, no grinding gears,... Now, I had a similar and I feel exact same sound a few years ago and when I took it in, the dealer replaced the timing chain tensioner and what not under warrantee; that fixed it then. So when I took the car back, now not under warrentee, and said the sound is back, the dealer its a different issue. But I know what I hear and I know its the same sound. I've read the other related blogs and none address my sound/noise. Anyone have a feel for this one? I don't believe its the normal manual transmission rattle others have complained and blogged about since I went years without it as the only owner of the vehicle. Any advice is appreciated. I don't believe my dealer.

I would start with a second opinion. But maybe don't tell the new shop what the first said.

I don't know that smelling burnt on a manual means anything, only in an auto with internal clutches slipping would it mean anything. Was there metal on drain plug (assuming it has a magnet)? Maybe send an oil sample to a lab? Definitely take it for a second opinion, and preferably not a dealer since it isn't under warranty.
